I knew I shouldn't have moved. I'm reading posts today and find that Vulcanel, Glaxony AND Southernbelle are in Austin? I've been talking to Southernbelle via e-mail for a little bit.
I miss home. I can't wait to move back. Too bad I didn't meet ya'll before I left. Native Texans are sexier, I'm convinced. Grab a Pacha Latte for me, will ya?
I hooked Southernbelle up with my dear friend and homeopath. She just opened her own clinic on Bee Caves (I know, chi chi - but that's where the money is...)
Ah, makes me so homesick. Cheers!

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,188,511I'v never been to Austin but it is on my list of places I must visit. Been dying to check it out for a few years now. Yesterday I tentatively made a hotel reservation for next year's SXSW. So maybe I'll finally get there!!

I'm going to say something so elitist...SXSW isn't what it used to be. Neither is Austin City Limits. You'll have a wonderful time - but maybe look on craigslist and find somebody that knows the ropes and the better venues to go see music. Stay with them - don't give your money to a hotel. Find an Austinite that knows SXSW and they'll know all the best places to eat and the complimentary *real* Austin experience. You can't get that at a hotel! All the best Tex-Mex is not on the beaten path! ...like I said, it was an elitist comment!

This is a reply to # 1,188,515It's a nasty place. I'd warn and encourage people from other places to stay away. Rattlesnakes, chiggers, scorpions, brown recluse spiders, drought. California and New York are much better destinations for people on the move.

This is a reply to # 1,188,527I am getting ready to move to California in about 6 months and when I got home from work today there was a message from one of my high school buddies who lives in Colorado telling me all excited, "Dude, you got to reconsider your move to Cali. If I was single and could move anywhere in the US it would be Austin Texas. I am here now! Dude, this is the second time I have been here and it is cool! Dude, dude...." Texas is not for the meek. Unless you grew up in a hot climate it takes a lot to be able to tolerate a climate like Texas or Arizona. My parents live in Tuscon and I was out there one summer when it reached 116. I don't care if it is a dry heat, it just about burned my balls off!! I am moving to San Diego to escape the extremes on either end of the tempature scale. No. After enough Yankee trash moved in, they changed the law in 04. Had to, for public safety reasons. Seemed the non-Texans don't know how to conduct themselves with the freedom of open containers. When it was mostly Texans, things were much safer for everyone, and open containers were permissible because people as a whole were more responsible.
They even changed the law to allow home equity loans, which was previously forbidden, to protect the people from the bankers. I'm fixin to move out to a better place, but won't tell anyone where.

This is a reply to # 1,188,544Not needed to carry in vehicle. Law is that vehicle is extension of the home.
But having a weapon is not the value. The value resides in the fact that the criminal knows that citizens are armed, and cannot discern between citizens which are armed and which aren't, so it serves as an overall deterrrent. For this reason, I don't need to have a weapon at hand, in general.
Carrying heat is detriment. I've had guns pulled on me twice in close quarter and in both cases disarmed the punks and sent them off. Further sayeth I naught. Had I been armed, I might have reached for mine and that could have been an error. Their perception that I was V ulnerable, was my asset. If I were to carry heat, I'd go with a purpose, and it woudn't be defensive.- Re:

Does. And I've had plenty of run ins with cowboys and good ole boys in traffic where more than words were exchanged, but nobody shows weapons because the first one who does will be toast. The stakes and tension are higher, but it enables one to use pointed creativity in on-the-spot wordsmithing, which must be clever yet civil but also veiled very slight insult and ambiguous threat but still on the southerly line of sanity. Being close to the line with a stranger who might be ready to go off any second sure makes the adrenaline rush, which one needs to know how to hold back and keep calm, being prepared for anything that might get thrown one's way. But on the whole, those are rare. They do seem to come in spurts, however.

My family used to bitch about yankees throughout my childhood - the term seemed to be subjective. Then a big family from a ritzy town in Connecticut moved in down the street and I understood. They complained about our motorcycles, carpentry noise...very strange people. Couldn't handle anything out of the 'norm.'
I agree. Anymore yankees move to Austin and it'll be even more commercialized - ruined! BTW - since I'm not in on the 'buzz' anymore - why did Austin vote against "Villa Muse"?
We were moving back sooner than later as my man is a sound tech. What happened? Why would the city vote against something that was not a corporate system moving in? How come they dragged their feet? It's ok for Samsung and Dell to run everything but the more lefty artists and movie-people couldn't get them to make a decision? Why???
And I agree - Texas is NOT for the meek. I moved because I needed a break from the heat. Now - I know why snow sucks so hard. It doesn't last 72 hours like it does during a Texas storm - it lasts for up to 9 months! I'm freezin' my arse off. Bleh.Advertisement

I just moved to Lago Vista, 20 miles north of Austin. I moved from the California wine country. That north bay area is the home of those lefty artists. There was one community, Sebastopol, that declared itself a nuclear free zone. That was the heart of the hippy resorts decades ago.
I love Austin for its liberals. That has to do with the universities and colleges in the area. The home prices brought me here for retirement. However, Travis county increased the value of my home by 20K more than what I paid. That raised my taxes higher than my home in CA. Traffic is not as bad as CA; but it is pushing it. Activities are great. Great place to retire. Also, no income tax. I can use my IRA with no consequence of State income tax. I know CA hates that; because I earned the money in CA.
I have deer visiting my yard each day. They just want to make sure that nothing is trying to grow. In the spring, my front and back yard become a nursery for the dear deer. They are becoming pests. My only worry are golf balls in my rain gutters now. Last year the lake was much closer to my house than this year. Floods. I did find a snake skin in my garden; but have never seen a live one. I have at least two road runners living around here. They kill snakes. Love those birds.
All in all, I'll take those lefty artists and movie-people.
Austin needs to prepare for more retirees moving here. The baby boom generation will and has changed culture all along its path.
