Yes! This is me, dp9, the FORMER absolutely gung-ho, staunch, yellow dog Texas state GOP delegate, majorly involved in the GOP party process, idol worshipper of GWB and His Enlightedness Ronnie Reagan, who just hung up her GOP party guns for the last time. I publically and formally detach myself from the Republican Party and move to the aisle between parties as an Independent Voter.
What happened?
Texas GOP county/senate conventions. That's what happened.
What do grassroots conservatives really care about... I mean, really? Pro-life (check, except the issue has no business being in the government's jurisdiction in the first place), pro-gun ownership (check), anti-gay (check, see comment on pro-life), and tax cuts to make the fiscal conservatives happy (check).
But what do grassroots GOP conservatives care about once you get past those issues?...?...? (sound of crickets chirping on a quiet summer night)
These really, really sweet folks DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!
They support the war in Iraq because of "9/11 and Saddam Hussein." (!!!) They trust GWB because "he knows a lot more than we do." When I tell them how the whole war is being mismanaged (I mean, c'mon. "Mismanaged" is hardly an anti-war comment, is it?) they get glossy-eyed and say- I'm not making this up- " There are some things I think we are better off not knowing." I tell them we have to choose candidates who promise to uphold our Constitutional rights or our country is dead in the water and they smile and nod and say that's why they are supporting John McCain. For real!
I ask them about McCain. Where is he on border security? Where is he on Iran? Where is he on doling out government favors to Big E, Big Pharma, and Big Box? Where is he on the NAU? Where is he on the environment?... OK, I don't ask too many conservatives that question! :-)
Their answer? HE'S A REPUBLICAN and we can't let a Democrat win!
Geez! People, I was there! "Them" was me, and I they! I thought I was so smart back then. I helped there to be a GOP sweep throughout the state of Texas back in 2004. Just about every seat for every office was filled with Republican bottoms. This included the judicial system, the legislative system, everything. You know what the fruit of all that is? Favors for corporations at the expense of individuals! But did I know? NO!
So you know what would happen if John McCain got in the White House? The good little conservative Christians in the GOP would go to sleep, knowing "their man" was going to take care of everything for them.
To me, Hillary = John McCain, except Hillary has her health care agenda. But if Hillary or Obama got in there and did the EXACT SAME THINGS that McCain would do, the conservatives would be screaming bloody murder. They would!
We (the GOP) had a chance to put Ron Paul in there, and we blew it. I'm getting stories from the conventions that there was all kinds of Robert's Rules of Order bending plus actual convention policy breaking (such as filling county convention delegate seats with people who didn't vote in the primary). I'm hearing stories that some of the Paul delegates were unruly, too, just so you get a fair picture).
For personal reasons (like this little event called WACO that occured 30 minutes away from my house just about exactly 15 years ago) I can't vote for Hillary. But I WON'T vote for McCain because he will put the politically active conservative evangelical Christian Right to sleep. If he gets out of the convention, I MIGHT just vote for the communist with the middle name Hussein just to keep the blood moving through the conservatives' veins.
I never thought I would write a post like this. Not in all my days.

To coin a phrase, Donna, I feel your pain. I, too, used to be a staunch Republican many years ago. Both parties stink. I refuse to ever vote for the lesser of two evils ever, ever, ever again, nor will I fall prey to the argument that I'm wasting my vote by voting for Ron Paul because he doesn't have a chance to win. I'm writing his name in no matter what. I'm voting for what I want, period, end of story. Will he win? Probably not, but I won't be a party to helping any one those other snakes get into office. I smell a revolution brewing, at least I pray to God it's the revolution I smell and not just my neighbor's barbecue. A dead person can sense that there's something terribly, terribly wrong and insidiously evil going on everywhere. Rant, vent, scream, do whatever you have to do, but hold on to that spark of hope. All of our political parties seem to have homogenized into one
It is all about the struggle to stay elected...or to stay funded for non-profits, or to keep the war funded so federal contractors may make 800 dollar hammers.
I think if we examine closely the problem exists at a very fundamental level of our culture and this plane

There is so much in what you expounded upon that I would like to follow up on, but will light on only one. What you said really puts "... really, really sweet folks...." into a much needed new light ... puts a whole 'nother meaning to the term, doesn't it? Just ask me. I know my share of some really really sweet folks who folks WHO DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. Some of them are my family, people I live with. The main difference, which upon close inspection and final analysis is really a minor difference at this, between the really really sweet folks who don't know anything that I know best and those you refer to is that the ones I am more familiar with are (with only a few notable exceptions) absolutely gung-ho, staunch, idol-worshipping robots blind to the cause of Democrats. I hate party politickers; period. Namely I hate democrats and republicans. If it weren't for all the partisan democrats and republicans hogging up most of the headlines the past century or so, I suspect that there may also be some others partisans lurking in the closets of politics, others needing dusted out like so many old cobwebs and dustbunnies in serious need of being swept up, vacuumed up and put out into the burn barrel for proper disposal. This potential for other partisans hiding out in their off off off broadway party closets so noted, for right now, my hate for republicans and democrats is sufficient. With the alleged exception (rumor that it is) that she squats to pee, Hillary is McCain, McCain is Hillary. Each is proven and on record, over an over, repeat, as being equally as corrupted as the other.
Well done (and well enumerated too), and congratulations Donna-dp9. That probably was not an easy conclusion for you to have reached and subsequently talked (posted) about. It is that which makes me all the more happy to know you. :)

One difference! McCain promises to lower taxes ( he may be lying)! hillary and O bama promise they will raise taxes!

I've heard this rant before ,mostly from loser democrats, but I beleive you are way off base, simply because most RP supporters have long ago figured out that republicrats are one party and would never seriously consider voting for either of them! For the love of God, even with Alzheimers, blind in one eye, can't see out of ta other, with a limb missing, and having been through a sex-change just so they could then turn transvestite & homosexual, while manifesting as a "legal alien" raising three crack babies to three unknown mates ...... (funny, without even trying I realize this pretty much defines the ideal modern-day voting constituency for a campaigner to cream their jeans over) .... if such a campaigning person will achieve one and only one accomplishment - not serve as the latest lapdog come-lately to international banksters, then I suppose the least I can do is to kick up this fairytale party another notch or two by promising to vote for such a mythical Roman clothed in white candi date.PS - did America really and truly reject RP, or did the monopoly media merely tell America that America rejected RP?
