This is my first post, but I am lucky to have found you guys. I've been suffering for about 10 years, and my BO seems to change, get better, and get worse, a lot worse. I'm suffering everyday now. At first I thought is was an infection, I took a round of anti-biotics, it cleared up, but soon returned. I don't really want to unload a 10 history of suffering, I think everyone gets the drift. Where I am today is more horrible than when I was in college. Day in and Day out I stink really badly. Somedays I don't smell it, I can tell by everyone's reactions to me that I smell. Today was extremely difficult, I had a meeting at work, in which I left early to give everyone a break of me. I feel so sorry for the people that sit around and tolerate my smell. I hear the whispers, and see those telling looks, the grunts and moans, and the "Oh my Gosh", and "That's Her?" I really destroys your confidence, I don't I have any. But how do you survive those manditory meetings? When your odor flares up, and when there is a break, people move away from you. How do you survive the embarrassment?

This is a reply to # 1,156,430When I had to deal with meetings, I just had to grin and bear it but I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I use to work at my local animal shelter,( The Young Williams Animal Center) had been there 5 years. Worked from cleaning cages up to the position of Incoming Animal Control Supervisor. I had the biggest office literally in the building and made pretty good money basically sitting at a desk all day, maybe played with a puppy or kitten or two every know and then. I loved my Job. As an incoming animal supervisor, I had to regularly attend meetings, I hated going, like you, I got the comments and the under-handed remarks that were intended to go over my head, they never did, I always caught them. I just wouldn’t say anything. I never do. It got to where I would not go to the meetings when they called them, I would pretend that I didn’t hear them, but they always sent someone to get me. I guess they thought it would some how “hurt my feelings” or make me suspect of them talking about me if I were to be “left out” of the meetings, or torture sessions as I called them. Well, one week they held a meeting, and they didn’t call me nor did they announce it. The reason was because the meeting was about me, the head of animal control was calling me out of my name when speaking about me to other’s . I was called “Shit Woman” instead of by my name. I overhead them talking about it after the meeting was over. He was also looking into getting me “replaced”, he said he knew just who to speak with, and he was given the O.K. to pursue this by the Animal Shelter director. Just as long as the animal shelter didn’t get sued. Finally I was fired, I didn’t even fight it, I was so tired…….

It breaks my heart to hear these stories. It's like there is a wall a few feet in front of you that just pushes people away when you are a social being who want to speak and to laugh out loud and to free to be yourself.
Well, this is why we're here. Not only to give each other a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on and a voice to speak, but also to be educated, to promote research in the scientific community, to raise public awareness through the press, and to promote legislation like GINA that's now before the U.S. Senate to protect our rights.
One of the MSN Body Odor group members, Cabel, conducts weekly conference calls in which he invites special guests. A couple of weeks ago, our guest was Dr. Cheryl Fields who's an expert on Human Resources and employment issues. She gave great suggestions about how to handle these problems. I suggest you join our conference call tomorrow so that you can ask about this.

There are many treatment options that have worked for the various types of Body Odor producing problems people have had in this forum.
First of all, I do recommend that you be tested for Trimethylaminuria (TMAU). To get more info about TMAU and where to be tested, send an email to the Trimethylaminuria Foundation, at theTFnetwk@aol.com and they’ll email you all the info.

Thank you for you kind response. I greatly appreciate kindness when it’s shown to me. One thing I’ve learned from all this is how valuable a kind word , a smile, or even compassion for another person is.
I was planning to get tested for TMAU before I was terminated from my previous job.. I had made a doctors appointment to test for this, I had also contacted two lawyers, one declined to take my case and I just gave up on the other one, I was scared that a big issue would be made of this, being the Young-Williams Animal Center in a City-County run facility, I was scared someone would contact the news media…and I didn’t need that.
However, after I was fired, over something trivial, I spoke to the owner of a veterinary clinic to find out weather or not they had means to fire me, he said that it was an unfair termination, and that there should have been a vet present. That, only a vet could fire me for what they were claiming as their reason ( I was fired by a kennel manager, because I didn’t vaccinate a sick pup, an animal that would have automatically been euthanized. Anything ill coming into the Young-Williams Animal Center is immediately euthanized after the legal holding period of three days. The reason they claimed they had to fire me was, due to the pup not being vaccinated, and that they HAD to euthanize it. In other words, because of ME not vaccinating to pup, THEY HAD to kill it. ) On my termination papers, they wrote that my actions( or rather lack of) lead to the suffering of an animal. They made it sound as if I had beaten an animal or something. Working in the animal profession is my life’s dream! Now, I work cleaning kennels at a local vet, I barely make enough money to cover my rent! LOL! But hey! That’s life, Right!?! All we can do is move on!?! I know that I sure am. I’m currently pursuing a hobby of mine in wildlife education, I will be dealing with the public A LOT, So I definitely want to get a handle on this. Just to give you a bit of history, as a child I was constantly constipated. It wasn’t uncommon for me to go three weeks or LONGER with out a BM! I had my Colon completely removed in 2001. All I have now is a small intestine, shortly after wards is when the odor started, I’d say maybe a year and a few months later. I use to post here way back in the day, Maybe you can find some of my old post. It feels good to be back! It's good to hear that you'll be joining us in the conference call tomorrow.
I did want to suggest to you to not take the supplements discussed in this forum, especially charcoal and probiotics without consulting first with your doctor since you have no colon as a result of a colostomy.
Has your doctor said anything to you about how to best treat your odor? Does he say that it is a result of the colostomy?
From what part of your body is the odor coming from?
Have you been tested for TMAU?
Sorry to ask to many questions, but hopefully you can find a solution to this problem.

I don’t mind your questions. I find them helpful, as they give me an opportunity to talk about this and get a few things of my chest.
I found out the hard way about trying the concoctions and supplements posted here on the site, the charcoal (Activated Charcoal 500 mg)is a prime example of this! I was fine taking the charcoal supplements, 4 a day for the first few months, I stopped a while and when I started back. WHAM!! They hit me like a ten ton heavy thing, couldn’t keep them down five minutes with out vomiting.
I don’t believe I had any odor issues before having my colon removed, or at least I never heard any complaints about my odor (but it is very possible I did have odor issues then). I can’t smell it myself, so I never spoke with him about this. Nor did he list this a possible side effect, however he did suggest that I see a colon hydro therapist after the operation.
I wasn’t able to see him about the odor when I stared having problems, I found another doctor and she plain out though I was crazy and thought the colon hydro therapist was just taking my money. She did run some test and found that my liver enzymes were off. She was the same one I was going to have test me for TMAU, but this was around the time I was terminated and I kind of gave up on things. So, no I was never tested for TMAU.
I’m not sure exactly where the odor is coming from, but for some reason I feel its from my entire body, I don’t smoke but when I’m around smokers the odor is noticeable by myself. And the odor is all over me. The smell is fecal in nature, I’ve herd one of my main antagonizes describe it as smelling like baby poo.

I know things have to be very rough for you right now without a job, and possibly either losing your medical insurance or having to pay more for it when you don't have the same income. I believe that you should have a few months of insurance before you lose it, isn't that right? If so, try to go have your TMAU test done. You are lucky that you have found a doctor who is willing to help you with it. Once you know whether you have TMAU, then you can at least start with the right diet your doctor's help to help you with your TMAU and your compromised digestive system.
Please don't take matters into your own hands with remedies, diets, and supplements without medical advise.
Most importantly, your need to find out what your rights are, even if you don't want to go back to work at that place with those people. You can still write to Dr. Cheryl Fields, who was the expert guest in the conference call, and who gave advise on employee rights against [disability] discrimination in the workplace. She gave out her home/voice mail phone number in the MSN Body Odor Support Group

for sufferers of Body Odor to call her. Your case is indeed an emergency because you need medical treatment, and you need your insurance. She can best advise you on what to do about that, even if you don't want your job back.

Just wanted to say that I /we all know how you feel and also wanted to welcome you here! You've joined at a good time because things are really moving along lately. Have you read through all the recommendations ie supplements, restricting your diet etc? I know this is a short message, but I wanted to just send a little bit of support because i often read posts and feel for the poster, but dont leave a msg, and it can feel like no one cares if no one replies, when we all do care so much. I used to post regularly and hope to start doing so again soon. So, let us know about what you are trying (if anything) and what is working. Sorry I can't offer any solutions to the embarrassment you feel at work, I would love to know what to say to make it better, but I know how tough it is so all I can do is empathise. Hi! I know exactly how you feel because I have been where you are with the job situations and I know how bad it hurts. But the good thing is you found the right place to come because there are plenty of people that have beat their odor problems. As I read all the posted suggestions it just come down to a good diet. Its definitely going to be hard to change your eating habits to, and eliminate foods that you have eaten all your life , but its worth it. Like I posted before Bentonite and a good diet has done wonders for me, and I don't know if it worked for anyone else, but its worth a try. Even when I slip up with my eating habits the Bentonite keeps me from smelling bad as long as I don't over do it. Changing eating habits is what everybody seem to have in common with each other. So give it a try and maybe next time you go to a meeting at work you'll be surprise at how many people would just start sitting around you and talking to you out of the blue.
