Hi Dana :-),
IMO you can get into some pretty gray-area definitions with the word 'supplement', since some of them, as Grz has stated, are also foods, so where does one draw the defining line between them..?
Other than the BSM drink, I take Krill Oil (NPK) and/or Cod Liver Oil, Kyo-Green powder, Kelp, Spirulina, Cayenne Powder, Wheatgrass juice when I grow it, sometimes Chlorella, sometimes Desiccated Liver, soon Gelatin will join this group, and am about to resume taking ~250-300mg Alpha Lipoic Acid at night, and Certo Pectin has recently joined the array.
All those except for the ALA and maybe Kyo-green are really what I would call foods.
Let me hasten to say that I do not regard this as a *healthy* way to eat. It is a stopgap and far, far from ideal, but is the best I can put into practice at this moment. As I get stronger and am capable of more, I shall put it into practice *immediately*.
But wait, let me hop onto this soapbox here..Ahhh.:
Beyond this, with me it comes down to Hippocrates' statement being the ideal, "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.."
I think all the "designer" neutraceuticals that are going around town these days are likely to cause problems. I think down the pike we will likely find that long-term ingestion of those things may lead to even more hard-to-define/correct health problems for a lot of folks.
Kind of like when the 'mainstream party line' was that Margarine (gag) was better for health than Butter, or the 'fat-free diet' being touted by PhDs who apparently never learned that half of our brain cells are lipids.
Mankind is not going to improve upon Nature. The sooner this species 'gets' that, the better off we will all be..
The *real* problem as I see it is:
These days, if you are not growing your own food then you are out of control of your food supply. That means you are out of control of your *health*.
..Exit soapbox, smiles and bows..:-)
Good Health to Us All,
Ladylove
