A styptic pencil containing silver nitrate will
stop blood flow and they make a powder which I
have used in the past. You usually do not do it
very often. If left alone, it will stop bleeding
in about five minutes. It is painful though. I
found it was better to cut a little, more frequently
and then the quick is usually not an issue. Also
doing the little snips once a week gets the dog
used to grooming. If your dog is fearful, I would
recommend a soft muzzle or a little piece of
pantyhose wrapped around its muzzle. When I put
the muzzle on, my dog knew what to expect as that
was the only time we ever used it.

Hi rigdon,

I know exactly how you feel as the last time I trimmed my older dogs claws she also jerked and I quicked her. And I was only clipping a short amount at a time. I do as zoebess suggested and clip a smaller amount but at closer times....

Anyways, I wanted to tell you that you can use cornstarch to stop the bleeding. It works in the same way as a styptic pen. Most kitchens always have cornstarch...
