I think its up to the individual, but not mandated by our Creator.
Prophet Abraham was one visited by two men, the prophet had one of his animals humanely slaughtered, and took the time to cook the meal himself. When he served it to his visiting guests, they did not eat. At first he was offended, and then he was scared because these two beings could not eat, they were Angels in the form of men sent by God to give Abraham a message.
These creatures have been created for man, just as everything in the Universe- all for the benefit of man.
The problem comes, when evil devils encourage men to do disgusting, evil acts on these defensless animals. When you see the corruption so widespread as it is today, you can conclude it is better not to eat meat if you do not know how the animal was treated and slaughtered. I think if one is aware and finds a source of good reliable farming, then that makes a big difference.
The thought of all most of our medicines alone contain animal products is frightening. How did I know when they gave me a heparin shot it was from a cow?
The greediness of man has gone TOO FAR with this animal-check out this list.
The products in our homes may not have on the label what we need to avoid buying it!

I am against commercial rendering plants and the great greediness and evilness of so called humans today.
May God forgive us.
