My mom has been suffering with Ulcerative Colitis for more than four years. She has been on predinose, and more recently, Remicade. Her last dose of Remicade seemed to not work and the doctor is now strongly recommending surgery. My mom is very scared and does not really want to have surgery, but she feels like she has no other option. I have been telling her about the SCD for a long time now, but she never believed it would work for her. About a week ago, I started buying ingrediants for the diet and cooking for her the recipes in the book (Breaking the Vicious Cycle). The problem was, whenever she would eat something from the diet, she would get SEVERE diarreah. She described it as being the most severe that she has ever had. This happened on both occassions that I made something for her on the diet. Now she really does not believe that the diet works and I am not sure what to do. Has anyone else had this severe reaction when they first started? It's so frustrating... my mom is so lost and I don't know how to help her. She has been ill on/off for sooo long now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Doctors are so frustrating, they only believe in the medical model and claim that nothing else works and just want her to have the surgery. My mom is scared of the surgery b/c she has heard from others that it still my not work and may even make things worse. Is this true? It would be nice to hear other people's experiences with surgery and this disease in general.
Thanks!
