I should preface this with the usual caveat that you should talk with a Dr.and everyone is different and may have different results with the same products. However, recently I ran across some information regarding the amazing healing powers of
Lugol's Iodine when zealously applied to keloid scars. Desperate to find something that worked, I decided to try this on my different atrophic scars.
Mind you, to take a step back, I've tried many things over the past years to get rid of this disfigurement with the following results.
1. Surgical scar revision followed by surgical dermabrasion- absolutely painful nightmares that made the one on which they were done all the more hideous/obvious and grotesque
2. Vitamin e -seemed to do nothing or only make the wound spread further;have read that it can actually irritate skin & inhibit collagen synthesis.
3. Vitamin a/other creams -nothing
4. Mederma - did nothing other than dry & itch.
5. Prescription retinol/tretinoin- perhaps some slight help.
6. Lasers-cost alot of money (hundreds to thousands) and are extremely painful and cannot be done too frequently, But, I did see some improvement to scars; however i also had some unfavorable skin issues pop up for the first time after one type of pixel laser.
Nonetheless, I think my experience with lasers prepared me to understand the process of
Iodine healing on scars becase the process is very similar, and yields similar positive or better results with each "run" and at a much lower price.
I applied
Lugol's Iodine to the scar LIBERALLY-with the plastic tip/dropper dripping/painting the skin rather than a cotton ball which barely leaves any iodine on the skin. I did this several times a day on days when the color on the wound would not pose an issue; Generally I would do thise for 2 days/nights. And, like lasers, after a day/two of generous reapplications/slight burning, the area would become dry & hardened...then the skin would peel. And, like with lasering, once the peeling was complete, the scar would be a bit less indented or deep, the wound less wide or detailed.
FOR ME, THE IODINE HAS REALLY HELPED. As to whether I will be rid of the scar completely, I'm not sure because I'm still sitting here w/ a few orange spots on the scarred areas. I've only been using the iodine for approx 2 months w/ days off between several days on. But, I do know, that it has been as good as -if not better (thus far) than even the pricey lasers or anything else (such as bogus creams) that I've tried in ten years!
Best of luck to you & just be careful w/ what you put on your skin and how much you are paying for it!
