Hoekstra to Host Veterans Medal Ceremony at VFW Post 446 in Muskegon
Among Those Receiving Medals will be the Family of Deceased Veteran Joseph Krywicki
Date: 10/20/2006 3:38:14 PM ( 18 y ) ... viewed 1636 times U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, on Thursday, Oct. 26, will present to more than 20 local veterans medals and commendations that were lost, never received or erroneously never issued.
The event is scheduled for 4:30 to 7 p.m. at VFW Post 446, 165 S. Getty St.
Among those receiving medals will be the brother of deceased U.S. Naval Reserve veteran Joseph G. Krywicki of Holton. Richard Krywicki will accept on the behalf of Joseph Krywicki the Purple Heart awarded to him upon dying in combat in Vietnam.
In May Joseph Krywicki will have his name inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Richard and his wife, Mary, have already received medals that he earned for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Gold Star Lapel Button.
Joseph Krywicki died on Sept. 13, 1966 in South Vietnam from enemy fire while on sentry duty at the Que Nang base near Saigon. He graduated from Holton High School in 1965 and enlisted in the Naval Reserve that same year.
Also receiving awards will be Muskegon Township World War II veteran Ernest V. Hansen, a corporal who participated in the mission portrayed in the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” He was later taken as a P.O.W. and was the first to shake Gen. George Patton’s hand when they were freed.
