Scouting Report:
If the Cards can't go with their ace for a big game, the next man they would want is the guy who would start Game 7. Suppan (1-1, 2.19 postseason; 12-7, 4.12 regular season) doesn't rattle when the stakes are high. Witness the last time he started Game 7 of the NLCS -- in 2004, when he was the winning pitcher against Roger Clemens in the Cardinals' pennant-clinching victory.
Acquired at the trade deadline from Pittsburgh, Perez (3-13, 6.55 ERA in regular season; 1-0, 7.94 ERA in postseason) paid dividends with a Game 4 win that wasn't pretty but got the job done. In trouble throughout, Perez gave up single runs in the second and third, leaving five runners stranded, and the Mets erupted for three in the fifth and six in the sixth. Two of the last three hitters he faced -- Jim Edmonds and Yadier Molina -- homered as Perez was trying to throw strikes. He left having given up five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. He'll be pitching on short rest but ought to be well rested, having gone 14 days between his final regular-season appearance and his Game 4 NLCS win.
