Joe Lieberman on Iraq
ned's iraq plan sure to fail
Date: 9/26/2006 5:25:37 PM ( 18 y ) ... viewed 1977 times We wanted to share with you a copy of the major address on the
future of Iraq that Joe gave Monday at the East Hampton VFW
Post.
In his speech, Joe laid out the clear difference between him and
Ned Lamont on the issue of ending America's involvement in Iraq:
Lamont is for giving up, while Joe is for getting the job done.
Joe exposed Ned Lamont's plan for meeting an arbitrary,
politically pre-set deadline nine months from now as a "formula
for defeat and disaster," then outlined a 10-point program for a
new approach in Iraq and getting our troops home in a responsible
way.
In setting up his plan, Joe reiterated his criticisms of the
Bush Administration's policies in Iraq, citing the failure to
secure support of critical allies in the run-up to the war, not
putting enough troops on the ground, failing to supply enough
body armor for troops, not having a plan to win the peace, and
not putting an Iraqi in charge of the Iraqi oil supply.
Joe called again on President Bush to replace Defense Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld because "it would reinvigorate our military,
from the halls of the Pentagon to the streets of Baghdad and
give us a chance to begin a new dialogue with our allies around
the world."
Joe noted that the Lamont plan -- which calls for beginning of
an immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq and a
complete withdrawal of American troops by July 1, 2007 - is
opposed by most leading Democrats, including former President
Bill Clinton and Senators Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, and Joe
Biden.
The truth is, Lamont's plan is not a plan for changing course,"
Joe said. "This is a plan for giving up in Iraq. For giving up
on the hopes of the Iraqi people for becoming free and
independent. And for giving up Iraq to the terrorists, the
sectarian militias, and to the Iranians and Syrians, who would
exploit the resulting chaos."
