‘May you live in interesting times.’ An ancient Chinese curse from a time when simplicity and naturalness was the preferred life. Another way of saying, ‘May you never have peace.’
Looking at the world today, we can see evidence that this curse has come to be the norm for most. Today, in the 21st Century, it might not be so obvious, but the truth is; slavery is alive and well. In fact, it has never been as strong and successful as it is today.
We are slaves to the cultural conditioning of generations past and present.
In the West, we have National Pride, ‘The Right to Bear Arms’, parents, educators,Religious leaders, politicians and media that support, encourage and perpetuate a lifestyle grounded in competition, instant gratification with no consideration of consequence, and a mindset that naturally
culminates in violence and destruction.
In the east, we have religious Fanaticism, instilled from a very young and vulnerable age, coupled with National Pride, and another culture that believes that owning a gun is a natural and desirable privilege.
We are taught that the way of competition and dominance is the way of the world. That ‘our team/school/city/country is the best, Number One’-
The East and the West are more similar than different, when viewed from this perspective. In fact, the East and the West are intimately entwined by these dynamics and need each other desperately, in order to maintain the charade.
A Hero needs an enemy and a Martyr needs a cause. And we wonderingly recite the slaves’ credo; ‘the rich get rich and the poor get poorer,’ smile,
shrug, and pick up our shovels, resigned, ennobled and ultimately; Wrong.
Slavery is alive and well in the 21st century, and like fools , we wear the chains with pride.
