According to the Torah, or Hebrew Holy book, Sara wanted her son Isaac to be the sole inheritor of Abraham's wealth, and told her husband to kick Hagar and her son Ishmael out of the tribe. Abraham reluctantly did so. Hagar and Ishmael almost died of thirst in the desert, but the Archangel Gabriel came to her and told Hagar where to find water.

What Torah does not tell us, but what is part of a Jewish lore that I never heard before today, is that Abraham, after his wife Sara's death, re-married Hagar and had more children with her. These children, along with their elder brother Ishmael, founded the mighty Arabic clans that thousands of years later accepted Islam as their faith after the Prophet Muhammed founded that religion in 610 A.D.

The Rabbi points out that even though Abraham did a terrible thing by banishing Hagar and Ishmael to the desert and what seemed a certain death, a hugh reconciliation of peoples was made when Hagar and Abraham remarried. In reading my daughter's world history book, I found further ties between the Hebrew and Arabic peoples: "Muslims believe that the founding and settling of Mecca is related to the story of Abraham and his son Ishmael. According to Islamic teachings, Abraham and Ishmael built a cube-shaped shrine called the Ka'bah about 4,000 years ago. Islam teaches that Abraham was commanded to build the Ka'bah as a house of worship and a reminder of Abraham's firm belief in one God. Worshippers honored the Ka'bah... by performing religious rituals." In A.D. 630, Prophet Muhammed entered the city of Mecca and re-dedicated the Ka'bah "to the one God, as it had been in the time of Abraham. The area around the Ka'bah became the first mosque, or Muslim house of worship."

Again, both modern-day Jews and Arabs trace their lineages back to Abraham. According to the stories from both Torah and Qur'an (Muslim Holy book), Jews and Arabs are half-brothers and half-sisters, and both share a strong religious belief in the One God. A time of reconciliation, as of old, is at hand.

Great Mother: Dear One, Namaste! Happy New Year to my Jewish children, so few now that there are, scattered around the world. Peace unto those who dwell in the Middle East along with their brethren, the children of Ishmael. You did well to go to services today for Rosh Hashanah with your own little one (my daughter) as she needs to hear the stories of old of how the Hebrews and Arabs are brothers and sisters of one flesh, yet fight so over "territory," each claiming parcels of my body. It is as two children fighting over their "fair share" of pie when there is more than enough for all. I sigh as you do over the situation. There will come a time, in your current lifetime, when Peace will prevail in the region. There are those children now growing up who will become the leaders to seek Peace. We will see.
