Biology of Belief

My Review of the Book By Bruce Lipton, Ph.D Called “The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles”

Last week I was in my local Barnes & Noble bookstore searching in the New Age section for anything that peeked my interest. I must admit that I do have a slight obsession with books and reading and can spend hours searching in a bookstore. Anyway, it wasn't long before I came across Bruce Lipton’s book called The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles which was put out this year by Mountain of Love/Elite Books. I have to say that this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I absolutely loved the synthesis of science and spirituality presented in the book. For me it was very reminiscent of the way the movie What the Bleep Do We Know was presented. Whereas What the Bleep could in a way be seen as Quantum physics meets consciousness, I think you can consider Lipton’s book to be Quantum physics meets human physiology. One of the advantages of this book is that it’s not overly scientific. Actually, I felt that any lay person such as myself (you know someone who doesn’t have a physics, chemistry or biology degree) can understand the implications of Lipton’s research and experiments. So no one should be intimidated by a book such as this.

I started reading the book when I got home and within a few days I had finished it. There were so many times while reading that I had those 'aha' moments. It just amazed me that so many of the beliefs I have held that came from a spiritual perspective now have a connection to and a basis in science. I think it will be surprising to many others as well as I believe the public still conceives of things in that strict duality of science and spirituality. As if these two things are diametrically opposed to each other. That is why books such as Lipton’s and movies such as What the Bleep are so important as they begin to bridge that gap and help everyone realize how instead of being opposed to one another they are in actuality intricately interconnected.

Many times while reading this book I was reminded of the lessons I learned from reading books by one of my favorite authors, Wayne Dyer. I read two of his books called, The Power of Intention (which was made into a great PBS Special) and There’s A Spiritual Solution to Every Problem. Within these books Dyer explains the utter importance of thought and intention. For him thoughts have a distinct energy and power. Your thoughts are energy which are sent out into the universe where they are directed back to you in the form of experiences in your daily life whether good or bad. That is why he always cautions, be careful what you think. Lipton’s book is akin to this philosophy and shows that just as our thoughts can create both bad and good experiences, they can also create disease or health. This leads to topics such as energy healing, the placebo affect and spontaneous remission/healing. Topics which are incredible important to all of us who seek a reality where drugs and surgery are a thing of the past.

Here is one great paragraph that sums up the overall premise of the book:

“Because we are not powerless biochemical machines, popping a pill every time we are mentally or physically out of tune is not the answer. Drugs and surgery are powerful tools, when they are not overused, but the notion of simple drug fixes is fundamentally flawed. Every time a drug is introduced into the body to correct function A, it inevitably throws off function B, C or D. It is not gene-directed hormones or neurotransmitters that control our bodies and our minds; our beliefs control our bodies, our minds and thus our lives... Oh ye of little belief!” (Lipton, Pg. 28)

I would like to highlight some of the many themes I found in the book that for one reason or another just really struck me and offer some of the thoughts that ran through my head while I was reading this book. As such, my next couple blog messages will be dedicated to The Biology of Belief.
