The Coon Dog and the Elephant....

Most people will only change when the pain becomes unbearable, and most of us will make decisions based less than the whole truth, or fact(s)....

Howdy folks:   Here we go again with some more great tales about the Southland...

Many stories have been handed down, most all of them teach a real life lesson... Our family has had story tellers, in each generation, and now it is my turn, as a Grandfather now, a few times over....  So we will have some of these tales from time to time on this blog...  Sit back and enjoy, remember you are suppose to learn something as well...

The first tale is about a hound dog down in Dixie....  Well a city slicker, {not necessarily a Yankee} was going down to to visit a friend in L.A.  {Ya L.A. round here that means Lower Alabama; not Calif....}   This friend lived out a piece, in the country...   When they met up, they was sitting out on the front porch... [ When the weather is nice, everybody sits out on the front porch in the evenings..]  They was just talking and drinking some good Ole iced tea... {almost everyone drinks iced tea down south} There was a couple of coon dogs a laying out on the porch too...

Ever now and then, one of them would let out a howl, then keep on tiring to sleep... The city slicker, ask the country boy "What wrong with your hound over yonder?"  To which he replied, " Ain't nothing, except his is a laying on an exposed nail; and is just too lazy to get up and move..."

Now for the lesson; there has always been pain and suffering in life...  Pain is natures way to tell you something is wrong...  You need to make some corrections... Maybe even move some...  The problem most people have is that just like the hound dog they put up with the pain rather than move, or do something...  The moral to this story,  is how much pain will it take to get you to pay attention??

The other story is about an elephant....  Once there were (5) five blind men living in a small town down south Georgia...  They had not gotten out in the world very much, so when they heard that a circus was coming to town, and had an elephant, they wanted to go see it... (relative term)  So once the show was set up, off they went to "see" the elephant...  Well each one took turns going up and feeling the elephant....    The first one went up and felt the trunk, and said " It is like a large Snake"... The second felt the ear, and said " It is like a large sheet hung on a cloths line"....   The third come up and felt the side of the elephant, exclaimed " It is like a Tall Wall"...  The fourth went over and felt the leg, replying " It is like a tree trunk".... Finally the fifth man came up to the tail, and said " It is just like a piece of rope"....

You see all were correct, but none of the blind men never really saw the elephant... This is true in life, many times we get glimpses of things and form opinions, which are not totally correct or true...  So we should learn from this that many times in life we "see" parts of something, but never really "see" the whole thing...  Be careful what you think you know or see in life it may not be the whole truth...

We will go over some more of these type stories from Southern Folklore again stay tuned...
