Day 20 - Mercury and Smoking Addiction
The relationship between mercury amalagams and smoking addiction.

"Siblerud found another interesting association with mercury. Women were 2-1/2 times more likely to smoke if they had mercury amalgam fillings than if they didn't Why? He suggested that the effects of mercury on the neurotransmitters of the brain. Mercury depresses the neurotransmitters' uptake of dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and norepinephrne, while nicotine has the opposite effect. He observed:
Nicotine has highly desirable effects upon the brain, and this one reason like to smoke. One might postulate that, if the amalgam mercury reduces the function of neurotransmitters and results in anxiety and if nicotine increases the neurotransmitter functioning, people with amalams would perhaps smoke more to relieve their anxious feelings."
I had very rotten teeth by my early teens and went to an old fashioned (and not very competent) dentist, so had a mouth full of amalgam when I was a young teenager. I started smoking when I was 17 and almost immediatley became very addicted and have been unable to quit since (I am 57 now).
Yesterday I went 8 hours without smoking and the day before 6 hours. This may not be impressive to most people, but it was quite an accomplishment for me. That got me to thinking about the circumstances when I feel the need to smoke and when I can easily forgo smoking. Turns out that it is very hard for me to work on the computer or talk on the phone without smoking, whereas it is easy to work outside in my garden or take a walk.
I work as a webmaster and sometimes spend over 12 hours per day at the computer. My brain seems to need nicotine to function. On the other hand when i am using my muscles by working in the garden or walking, mental activity is less and the need to smoke is also much less.
I'm wondering if chelating this mercury out of my brain would help me quit smoking.
