Cinnamon beneficial for diabetics
Sixty people (mean age, 52.2 years) with type 2 diabetes who were not on insulin therapy were randomly assigned to receive cinnamon (1, 3, or 6 g/day) or placebo for 40 days.
Compared with baseline, all three doses of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose (18-29%), triglyceride (23-30%), LDL-cholesterol (7-27%), and total-cholesterol (12-26%) levels; the responses to all the doses of cinnamon were similar. No significant changes were noted in the placebo group. The reductions in mean fasting serum glucose and triglyceride levels were all significant (p < 0.05) compared with placebo, and some but not all of the reductions in total- and LDL-cholesterol levels were significant compared with placebo.

Comment: These results indicate that daily ingestion of a modest amount of cinnamon (1 g/day or more) significantly reduced serum glucose and triglyceride levels, and possibly reduced serum total- and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In previous studies, extracts of cinnamon have been shown to increase glucose uptake in vitro. In addition, cinnamon appears to aid in triggering the insulin cascade (the series of biochemical actions stimulated by insulin). Taking cinnamon is an inexpensive and apparently safe way to improve glucose levels and other metabolic abnormalities that occur in people with type 2 diabetes.

Cinnamon Spice Benefits Blood Sugar and Cholesterol

Cinnamon improves glucose and lipids of people with type 2 diabetes by Alam Khan in the December 2003 issue of Diabetes Care, found “intake of 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon per day reduces serum glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes and suggests that the inclusion of cinnamon in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.”

The improvement in blood sugar (glucose) levels was in the range of 20 to 50 mg/dl after 20 to 60 days. Cholesterol decreased 20 to 30 mg/dl and triglycerides about 20 mg/dl in the same period. The effects seem to last for some days even after stopping the cinnamon.

Comment: Here is a safe addition to your diet to help improve your blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Of course, this action should be after a no-cholesterol, low fat diet, and exercise, with associated weight loss – this approach will usually cure type 2 diabetes. (See my February 2004 newsletter article: Type-2 Diabetes – the Expected Adaptation to Overnutrition.)

Several “natural” vitamins, minerals and herbs have been reported to improve blood sugars and/or cholesterol – but do not expect these to alleviate your need for a serious change in diet and lifestyle – and they include:

Food and spices: bitter melon, Gymnema, Korean ginseng, onions, garlic, flaxseed meal, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, and turmeric.

Supplements: -lipoic acid, biotin, carnitine, vanadium, chromium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins B3, E, and K.

A spoonful of cinnamonArecent 40-day study found that less than one-quarter teaspoon of cinnamon per day lowered blood levelsof glucose (sugar), cholesterol, and triglycerides—a form of fat that can build up on artery walls—in type 2diabetics. Sixty men and women, average age 52, with at least a four-year history of diabetes were dividedinto four groups that took either 1 gram, 3 grams, or 6 grams of cinnamon per day, or a placebo. Cinnamon waseffective at all dose levels, and reduced blood levels of sugar by 18% to 29%, LDL—the“bad”—cholesterol by 7% to 27%, and triglycerides by 23% to 30%.Study author Dr. Richard A. Anderson, PhD, of the Beltsville Human Nutrition ResearchCenter in Maryland suggested that diabetics add a dash of cinnamon to foods and beverages.Dr. Anderson also noted that cinnamon may help stave off type 2 diabetes in at-riskpopulations including those who are over age 45 and either inactive, overweight, or both.Reference: Diabetes Care; 2003, Vol. 26, 3215-8.

In 2003, Anderson and coworkers published their results from a double-blind controlled trial using cinnamon and placebo with 60 adult type 2 diabetic patients. Ten patients received one gram cinnamon daily for 40 days; 10 received three grams daily; and 10 received six grams daily after meals. Thirty placebo patients received capsules of one, three, or six grams of placebo after meals for 40 days.

Blood measurements were taken at 0, 20, 40 and 60 days (20 days after last capsules). There was no significant change in blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, or LDL cholesterol among the placebo patients over the 60 days. The cinnamon patients had blood- glucose decreases of 18 to 29 percent and triglyceride decreases of 23 to 30 percent. Total cholesterol went down 13 to 26 percent, while LDL cholesterol dropped 10 to 24 percent. There was overall no significant change in HDL cholesterol levels. Ironically, some parameters were lower at day 60 than day 40, showing a deep-seated improvement in metabolic status. None of the measurements at day 60 went back up to the high levels at day 0. No side effects were observed. Thus, cinnamon has now shown excellent activity to normalize blood insulin/glucose/ lipid metabolism in people where it was impaired.

Geoff, I've been reading up on cinnamon for a while now and can't believe the amazing powers a simple, little spice like that could have. Earlier today I actually found the following:

Cinnamon has been found to triple insulin's ability to metabolize blood sugar, or glucose, according to research conducted at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. Because of this ability, cinnamon protects against diabetes, reduces hunger, and helps control sugar cravings, thus making it easier to control weight.

Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day significantly reduces blood sugar levels in diabetics, a new study has found. The effect, which can be produced even by soaking a cinnamon stick your tea, could also benefit millions of non-diabetics who have blood sugar problem but are unaware of it.

The discovery was initially made by accident, by Richard Anderson at the US Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland.

Volunteers with Type 2 diabetes were given one, three or six grams of cinnamon powder a day, in capsules after meals.

The active ingredient is not in cinnamon oils. But powdered spice can be added to toast, cereal, juice or coffee.

Uses of Cinnamon and Honey in combination for a variety of health issues:
note* I have not researched the following cinnamon cures as of yet so keep an eye out for more studies related to these potential uses for cinnamon in the fututre.

Ayurvedic as well as Yunani medicine have been using honey as a vital medicine for centuries.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.

In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week out of the 200 people so treated practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

HAIR LOSS: Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath and keep it for approx. 15 min. and then wash the hair. It was found to be effective even if kept on for 5 minutes.

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder
mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to
reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day, any Chronic cholesterol is cured. As per information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomachache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India & Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food, relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly arrests the ravages of old age. Take 4 spoons of honey, 1 spoon of cinnamon powder and 3 cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, 3 to 4 times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age.

Life span also increases and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning 1/2 hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one-cup water. If taken regularly it reduces the weight of even the most obese person.

Also, drinking of this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month 3 times a day.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon power in equal parts, are more alert and flexible.

Dr. Milton who has done research says that a half tablespoon honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3.00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, first thing in the morning gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water. So their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

Other potential anti-diabetes foods include 1) noni juice (Morinda citrifolia), a traditional Polynesian cure-all for many disorders; 2) cinnamon; 3) jambul, a plant related to cloves and another Ayurvedic remedy; and 4) stevia, a popular sugar substitute isolated from a South-American shrub.
