Jorje Ortega Gutierrez, eight years old, is deeply engrossed in created and decorating a headband...an Enchanted Garden Kid Activity
at World Environment Day Tecate.
Maria Gutierrez Munoz
wrote a note after spending 25 minutes with us.
She wrote out a seed dream and planted seeds. She helped her son and daughter, Mariso Ortega Gutierrez, 11 years old finish up the headbands they made.
[She wrote a note.
I will get it translated when I meet a person who can do this....]

Soil Mates!
It's a new idea for most of us!
The Teaching goes:
The Earth and the Soul are Soil Mates!
How do I teach this idea?
Where does it start?
Can kids get the idea of having a
relationship with the Soil?
In Spanish there is a word for the Earth.
'de La Tierra," but I could have find a word
for "Soil.
It is important that the idea of Soil be introduced.
There is a word for Soul.
I made head bands for the first time last year
with the Jewish Kids at the High Holidays.
World Environment Day was an opportunity to
make headbands with the Children of Tecate.
I had set a number of activities on my agenda.
I was dabbling in all of them at this first
Enchanted Garden @ the World Environment Day.
I wasn't satisfied with the words for the headband.
How to say Soil Mates?
The closest we came up with to start was
"Friends of the Earth."
A lovely family came by early in the day,
Maria and her two children.
I got a chance to see how making the headbands would play out.
My house mate Angelene had her two friends Ron and Don
cut up a bunch of headbands to use.
We used a few of them at this first outing.
I wanted to test out the use of Rhimax Eco-Paper for this purpose.
It is a wonderful medium for art.
My friend Liora Leah is using it with Milk Paint.
Ryan Gillette of the Rhimax Company saying YES to
making me some headbands I can use. They will have
the words Soil Mates and likely some in Spanish.
The kids will use crayons to fill in the words and then
draw Veggies and other Plant materials.
I have a ways to go to fully develop the Lesson Plan.
I can see having a Club of Kids who are like Pen Pals...
they are Soil Mates.
When I advance the idea of going to the schools,
I will want to have photos of other kids on the other side
of the border...and photos of kids--likely the Rodriguez Kids...
THe Kids who Garden will be in the "Soil Mates" Enchanted Garden Club.
This was a start.
Here is a Record of the Beginning of this Enchanted Garden Project
that began at this World Environment Activity June 2, 2007.
