Walter Valentine Andrews "Harpo"
January 27, 1917- May 6, 2006

He was the brother of the famed
Andrews Sisters...

The resemblance in this photos is unmistable.

Photo of Harpo will follow.

Was there Jewish Blood in the Andrews
family????

Jack Lalanne:
Opened the first modern health spa

Harpo played a role in this....
He had a beef with Jack...Jack...started
as an employee of Harpo in San Francisco...
story needs clarification.

photos of Jack Lalanne body building.
I have similar photos of Harpo, who was
also a body builder.

mentions first health Club in Oakland.

Harpo lived in the house of his mother after she died
in Alameda...near Oakland.

from a bio note on Gypsy Boots:

His philosophy of clean living, exercise and healthy eating (laid out in his books "Barefeet and Good Things to Eat" and "The Gypsy in Me") attracted thousands of fans worldwide and netted him 25 appearances on the Steve Allen Show in the early 1960s. Inspired by the German "Naturmensch" movement, Boots and a "tribe" of fellow bohemians spent the 1940s living off the land in Tahquitz Canyon near Palm Springs, sleeping in caves and trees and bathing in waterfalls.

Harpo told stories about this. Once Gypsy came to see Harpo at
our Restaurant. I brought him there. They obviously knew each other
and were old friends.

Gypsy also had an old friendship with Jack Lalanne.

As Harpo told the story, He started a spa in San Francisco.
Jack was one of his employees, but "took over" the gym in some way.
Gypsy would sleep there at times. That was how the trio met...
This is speculation. Harpo had some hard feeling about Jack
Lalanne. I once asked Jack about this story...he told a different version.
I will ask him again, if I get the chance.

Harpo told me he was part Jewish. The Andrew sisters are said
to be from a Catholic father, but made famous a Jewish song in the
40's. Harpo was a great story telling. It was not always for certain
what was real or embellished. (I hear him not liking me saying that...)

I saw some amazing things first hand...He was definitely a body
builder.

He told a story that he was of Portugese decent. The history says
the Andrews's sisters were of Greek descent. The mother's name
of Harpo was Josie. I met her once, I believe, or recall writing to her
for Harpo. He told a story that as a youth she was being transported
to America, but the ship was hijacked by pirates. He was the offspring
of one of the pirates, who later married his mother. This may have
been pure fabrication. I am not sure.

Harpo made avocado sandwiches for Yogananda, one story went.
One of his favorite books was "The Autobiography of a Yogi."

Yogananda was said to have been introduced to this country
by Leon De Seblo, who Harpo knew. I met Leon Deseblo when he
was 105. He clearly remembered Harpo. DeSeblo told stories
about Yogananda. DeSeblo was one of the early enthusiasts
for Chlorella, one of the first of the superfoods. Jensen got into
Chorella through DeSeblo. Jensen was on the trail of the longest
living man of China...that was how he met DeSeblo, who was said
to know this man.

DeSeblo was one of the early Health Barnstormers in the generation
of Paul Bragg or earlier. Jensen continued in this fold. Jensen knew
Paul Bragg. Harpo admired Jensen, and also had met Paul Bragg.

Definite soul group activity here.

Deseblo created the Saint Christopher's Medal...a popular tool
for travelers in the 70's or earlier...

Read about the Saint Christopher's here:
http://www.luckymojo.com/saintchristopher.html
The patron saint of travellers. Hippy travelers I met
at our restaurant carried or wore this medal in the early 70's.

I brought Dr. Jensen into Harpo's restaurant once. It was an interesting
meeting. I will tell that story another time.

Just now see a comment on my blog
about the passage of Harpo.

Harpo was one of my spiritual fathers in this life.
I am sorry that he left without me knowing
or my being in contact during his final year.

How very sad.

I wonder if others other there
knew of these wonderous man
who invented the name "smoothie"
for the drink we all know.
