Bee in her Dress

Calla Lillies for Mother's Day?
They are a flower that bees love
and can be grown organically.

I remember a famous poem,
maybe it is a children's story
maybe a chicken or a cock
in the barnyard, the pet of a little girl
as I recall, that was stung by a busy bee
and died. There was much pain to the little
girl, the cock, and perhaps the bee
to have separated from its stinger
and lost its life.

Sunday on the eve of Beltane
that night when the gallants lads
and lovely ladies break all the rules
and wonder through the fields,
there was a beautiful woman in a flower dress
at the Farmers' Market.

Her dress had flower images that reminded
me of petals. She was standing in front
cut Calla Lilies now in
white containers, but the bees were having
their day with the stamens and lips.

She was adamant that she wanted the
flowers made famous in the paintings
of Georgia O'Keefe, and could only stand there
with one hand holding her dress close
to her body. She had a grimace on her face.l
With the other hand she was attempting to
get some of the Calla Lillies.
She had fear that the bees would have
their way with her as well as the other flowers
and go under her dress.

I watches this magical scene.
If I were quick enough I would have asked
if I might have captured this image with the camera
but it was all happening too in the moment.

There were flocks of bees everywhere on
the Calla Lillies, and yet all the other
buckets of various flowers had none.

It was later in the week, I spoke to Joe Sr.,
grower of these flowers.

The Calla LIllies are one of the
few flowers he grows that can grow with pesticides.
Most of the others ask man-made remedies
to hold back the buglife. The bees did not
seem interested in them.

I would like to see the trend grow
toward more and more organic flowers.
as Mother Earth would want.
The industry of flowers has spoiled much ground,
but the tide is turning.

Calla Lilies will be the first flower
grown by Joe Sr. that I will ask
Whole Foods to introduce into their stock.
He tells me there is not much competition
in the US for Calla Lillies at present. They
are not the easiest to ship, perhaps.

Here is a lovely company run by
a man I met once at the Natural Product Expo West.
You can order
