An Earthquake does not say
excuse me
An earthquake is a fault in communication;
it is a cumulative explosion from what has not been said.
An Earthquake deos not say, Excuse me, are you ready for this?"
There is a time to be courteous and well mannered,
to ask 'do you have ten minutes to hear this?"
There is also a time when feelings burst forth.
Better we do it than the earth.

From Confessions of an Essene Visionary
Leslie Goldman, your enchanted gardener
was editor of the San Fernando Sun Newspaper
on the morning of February 9, 1971.
The regular editor had an Achilles heel injury
and went into the hospital elevating the
feature writer and photographer of the paper
to the edtiors desk.
The Course of HIstory for the people
of San Fernanod and the surrounding
neighborhoods was changed, and his life forever.
At 5:59 AM he lived in a shared bedroom
across from San Diego State University (then
San Fernando Valley State College) with very tittle
to say to his roommate who slept in another bed,.
or for that matter to two other housemates in the
apartment.
There were also more than 5000 students on the street
who had little to say to each other, except maybe
a little chit chat, but nothing too deep.
I mean why would people in fraternities talk to
non-fraternity students? Why would blacks
have to say to whites? What would Iranian students
have to say to Greeks?
at 6:01 AM in the morning, an enormous earthquake
hit the area.
by 6;03 AM more than 50 students, men and women
were in the middle of the street in nightgowns and pajamas
with plenty to say.
Suddenly everyone was quite intimate and had reason to be.
No one thought twice NOT to say hello, regardless
of race, sex, or nationality.
They realized they were all in the same boat.
During the next week, Leslie recorded through photos
and stories that appeared in the San Fernando Sun
newspaper acts of heroism,
acts of community bonding, acts of friendship
that are natural to the human condition
living in harmony with Mother Earth.
In an act of Fate, the Van Norman dam
above part of the Valley, a water reservoir
cracked a leak.
The water started to seep out.
The entire range of cities below had to be evacuated.
People were sleeping in cots next to each other
in high school gyms.
Police, as precautionary measures, were stationed
outside the evacuated area, to prevent looting.
The attitude between police and kids was very friendly
because everyone needed each other and appreciated
they were all community.
People who had never particpated in politics or community
activities suddenly became very involved in local
affairs and filled stadiums beccause they wanted to make
sure that their leaders responded to their needs for quick relief
and federal funds.
Water lines broke, and beer trucks suddenly showed up
filled with life giving water to doll it out.
Catholic priests, Jewish Rabbis, people who did not believe
in God at all, suddenly were drinking from similar cups.
All this was recorded by Leslie Goldman, who would
later become Your Enchanted Gardener.
