Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis in men, exposing the end of the penis. A lot of families go for it because of cultural and religious purposes, and some go for it for hygiene purposes. Some families choose not to circumcise.

In Jewish and Islamic families, it is the religious ritual to circumcise their newborn babies. It is also common in the United States, and in some African tribes where men go for circumcision to the circumcision clinic.

How does circumcision take place in the clinic? What are the health benefits of it, and how to take care of a circumcised penis?

Keep reading to find the answers to this question.

The Procedure of Circumcision:

Circumcision of Adults :

It is typically performed on a day-to-day basis. It indicates you are not required to stay overnight.

Once you will be admitted, your doctor and anesthetist will meet you. You can voice your concerns or ask questions to them. You have to sign a consent form after getting answers to your queries.

Different anesthetics are used in this surgery. You can choose the anesthetic with which you are comfortable. If you opt for general anesthetic, you will be asked not to eat or drink anything 6 hours before surgery.

A general anesthetic will keep you unconscious throughout your surgical procedure. You can opt for a local anesthetic injection too which will numb your penis and the surrounding area. In a few cases, spinal anesthetics can be used in which you can't feel anything below your waist.

In this surgery, the foreskin of the end of the penis is removed using surgical or scalpel scissors.

Bleeding can be stopped using a cauterization procedure. The remaining edges will be stitched together through dissolvable stitches.

Circumcision of Babies:

In different cultures, circumcision is done on newborn babies within ten days of their birth. Premature babies or babies with medical concerns may need some extra time until their health condition gets better and they can be circumcised.

For newborn babies, parents are asked to sign the consent form. The surgical procedure is taken by skilled practitioners who are specially trained to circumcise newborns.

Your son will lie on his back with his hands and legs secured. The practitioner will clean the penis area and check for any infection or health problems. The anesthetic will be given to him via a cream or injection which will numb his penis.

There are different techniques for performing circumcision which the practitioner will choose according to his expertise.

The three major methods of circumcision are:

●       Gomco Clamp:

This device makes circumcision swift and effective, causing less bleeding. It uses a steel bell that protects the glans penis.

●       Plastibell Device:

In it, a plastic ring is placed between the foreskin and the head of the penis. A string is tied around the foreskin. It will crush the skin against the ring causing the excess skin to be removed. This ring will fall off on its own after almost 5-10 days.

●       Mogen Clamp:

In this procedure, the clamp will pull the baby's foreskin forward. The clamp is locked in place for about 90 seconds which will decrease bleeding. After the surgery, the clamp will be taken off.

Your doctor will give you some advice that you have to follow for the healing of your circumcised penis.

Recovering after Circumcision:

Recovering of Adults:

You will be given some painkillers before being discharged from the hospital. It can take almost 10 days for your penis to heal, so it is advisable to take one week off from your office. You should avoid having sex for almost 4 weeks after your operation.

For 3-4 days after your surgery, you can feel pain, redness, and swallowing around your penis. For it, you should take recommended painkillers and apply Vaseline on the tip.

Wearing loose-fitted clothes for 2-3 days will also help you in avoiding pain. You may also feel discomfort while passing urine.

If the pain gets worse, or you have a temperature, or if there is increased swelling and bleeding, you should contact your care team.

Recovering of Babies:

It is important to keep the penis area as clean as possible. Do not use baby wipes, and gently clean the area with warm water. Only a sponges bath should always be provided to newborns.

You should change the dressing on the incision whenever you change a diaper. When the dressing is removed, you should keep using Vaseline on the penis until the area doesn't get healed. Also, keep the diaper a bit loose to avoid irritation.

You should contact the doctor if your child does not urinate in the first eight hours of surgery, or if there is fever, swallowing, or pus-filled blisters.

Key Takeaways:

Circumcision can take place in adults and babies for different reasons. It is a swift and less painful procedure in which the penis can be healed on its own. But if you feel any sign of infection, you can contact your circumcision clinic.
