There are several reasons for swollen feet which include high heels, pregnancy, injury, overuse, edema and many more and those can be temporary, but also permanent. The latter has its origin in water retention is one of the most common causes for swollen feet. It can be very annoying, uncomfortable and difficult to deal with, but even though it does not represent a medical emergency situation, it has to be taken care of as much as possible in order to ease all the symptoms.

Edema can usually be found in both sides of the body and can include swollen lower legs, ankles and feet, but you can also see it on only one part of the body. This often gives the impression that the affected limb is not of the same person and can really cause confusion, worry and even some mental health issues as the individual may feel too self-conscious because of it. This situation can seriously stay in the way of mobility and it can reduce it considerably, but there are no known efficient medical remedies or cures. Instead there are some things that can be done to help with the swelling and discomfort.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a supplement that can help with many issues like, constipation, indigestion, liver disorders that cause magnesium deficiency, high blood pressure. Besides its calming effects and general wellbeing, it can also help with swollen limbs because of water retention. Usually it does not have any counterindications, but upon taking the supplements, a doctor should be asked for recommendations and usage, especially if there are kidney or heart problems involved. In general, in order to have an effect, between 200 and 400 grams of magnesium should be added to the daily diet. Magnesium deficiency, especially in elders, has been known to be linked to osteoporosis, higher blood pressure, diabetes, strokes or clogged blood vessels. Besides pills and other forms of supplements, this component can be found in fibre containing food like cereal, vegetables, seeds, nuts, whole grains, but also diary products chocolate and even coffee and some kinds of meat.

Compression stockings or sleeves

Compression stockings and sleeves are medical devices that can help with swelling by putting pressure on the affected area. They are elastic and they are supposed to be worn over the swollen leg or foot in order to compress it an relieve some of the pain and discomfort through pressuring the area. They are usually used in affections and disorder that are linked to veins that are distended and have a higher blood flow. They are made with stronger elastics that are different from the ones used in the usual dress or in socks for athletes and are very constrictive around the ankles gradually decreasing the level of tightness towards the upper leg. They are very effective in swollen feet because of water retention and edema and they can be found in any pharmacy or drug store. They come in different shapes and sizes and it’s best recommended to start with lighter pressuring ones and only increase the constriction gradually.

Shoes and other footwear

It is very hard for people with swollen feet to find proper and comfortable footwear in conventional shoe stores. They often choose to buy bigger ones just because they are more comfortable, even though they look a bit funny. The frustration comes especially when the feet are so swollen that walking becomes a serious issue because regular shoes do not help with it. A better option would be to look for and buy wide fit boots and shoes of good quality so you can have proper footwear for any kind of weather. They are made to fit the wider feet so people with these kinds of issues won’t have to feel like shoe shopping is the most unpleasant experience and frustration because they can’t find something that fits and doesn’t hurt. The quality is very good and they are durable, so they won’t break easily and there is a wide range of footwear proper for any occasion. Besides, they also follow the trends closely.

Physical exercise

Sedentarism is actually a wide spread problem especially in the latest years. It causes many problems and the biggest one is obesity. Besides that, this is another reason for having swollen feet. Now, it is true that walking too much does not help either, but sitting for too long in one place can cause serios swelling in feet and legs. In order to decrease the levels of swelling, the feet should be moved from time to time to relieve all the pressure and pain. It is important that the joints are bended from time to time, otherwise they will get stuck. Physical exercise also helps with losing weight which can reduce the problem with swollen feet and general health and wellbeing. Of all the possibilities in practicing any kind of sport, swimming is the best option because the feet won’t have to sustain the whole weight of the body and in also puts a little pressure and smoothens the skin. It is very good with releasing the pain in joints, back and muscles and it helps the body to relax.

Raising the feet up

It is well known that after a long tiring day the best and most relaxing thing to do is to put the feet up. It relieves the pain, discomfort and that annoying pulsating sensation in muscles. Doctors recommend it especially if the swelling is caused by injury like sprains or twists, but also in edema. Even furniture producers and providers encourage relaxing the feet by putting them on something high and this is why they recommend ottomans. Putting the feet up on the wall or even on a pillow while laying in bed may help a great deal with the swelling in feet, legs and joints. There are also some yoga poses that help with relaxation and a better blood flow.
