NICE STORY IN SAN FRANCISCO PAPER
AT NATIONAL HEIRLOOM EXPO
SEPTEMBER 11,12, 13, 2012
There are few places where cattle wranglers, worm farmers and rare-fruit aficionados, can mingle with world-renowned scientists and environmental visionaries. Whether it's heritage breeds or heirloom seeds, genetic conservation is at the core of the second annual National Heirloom Exposition, Tuesday through Sept. 13, at Santa Rosa's Sonoma County Fairgrounds.
Billed as the world's only pure food fair, the not-for-profit educational expo is attracting not only backyard gardeners and seed-collecting hobbyists but also activists hoping to use the event as a platform for the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act initiative, otherwise known as Proposition 37. If passed in November, it would require food companies to label genetically modified foods - those that have been altered in the laboratory to boost resistance to weed killers and pests; increase yield per acre; and reduce the need for fertilizer.
While the Food and Drug Administration considers these foods safe, Prop. 37's proponents say consumers have a right to know what they're eating, especially when the long-term effects are unknown. Opponents argue that the benefits outweigh the negatives and worry that labeling will send consumers the wrong message about bioengineered foods. No state has been able to pass such a law so far, although many other countries routinely provide this information on their food products.
Meet at Luther Burbank’s Garden & home–Gather our excitement and dreams together for the National Heirloom Expo as we remember the words and works of Luther Burbank, one of the great horticultural experts of all ages.

"sacred seed, sacred plant!
i hold you in my hands
and hold you as my future.
thank you for representing
wishes i am planting.
as you grow,
so will my seed dreams.
growing you will help me
celebrate the harvest
in my life. thank you

i am a sacred seed.
thank you for reminding me

this prayer is a reminder why we need heirloom seeds to 'plant your dream!"
“if you watch the growth of this seed...
you will find that there is an indestructible
and mysterious power in it--the power of life.
if you watch long enough,
you will see that the grain disappears
and is replaced by a plant
which will triumph over
all obstacles and opposition--
which will grow higher and higher
and higher because it has life within it.”
