From a Review of
Mendel in the Kitchen
Genetic modification of plants could enhance the ability of plants to use nitrogen-containing compounds. Researchers have inserted the enzyme glutamine synthetase into wheat, which allows for the transfer of nitrogen to the amino acid glutamic acid, and from there it can be transferred to other amino acids and aid in the formation of proteins and other nitrogen-containing compounds. This led to faster development, flowering and heavier protein-containing wheat seeds.
