Arundo donax, the giant reed has always been a favorite plant
of many cultures. Valued for its many uses, that is why the mission fathers brought it with them to southern california in the 1800's.
Arundo Donax, The Giant Reed, one of the most amazing fast growing plants in the world, has more than 102 uses as reported in the upcoming e-book by Leslie Goldman, Your Enchanted Gardener. Arundo Donax is one of the big moneymakers for Monsanto Corp. it's landmark product, Roundup Herbicide, the ever popular weed killer, and other forms of gylsophate, are used with the intent and purpose to eradicate the amazing weed that can grow up to a foot a week.
Monsanto Corp, once a little hometown Saint Louis outfit, is now a multi-national financial success, although its profit statement has wavered in recent years with a growing natural sustainability movement pointing fingers at the company that has given to the world such gifts as Agent Orange, and Dioxin, two very popular other war products, aside from Round herbicide.

A fledgling movement, the arundo tribe, has another idea for the plant. rather than treat it as an noxious invasive weed to be killed, pierce its inner meaning and see it for what nature intended, a crop, a crop foremost to help people regain their beat with nature.

the movie avatar grossed millions. it is about a tribe of very tall indigenous people of a different planet who held a tree as sacred. arundo, is no tree. it is a grass. grasses are one of the most resilient and amazing of life forms, and arundo is one of the most resilient of all grasses on the planet.
attempt to kill it, and it adapts. attempt to make war on it, and it will wipe out your brush management budget, that is if you are a city. some cities have a work around--for getting their money back with arundo.
one idea is call arundo trash, then have contractors take it to the landfill where they earn about $63.00 a ton in disposal fees. in san diego alone, there are tons and tons of arundo growing. the only problem with this moneymaking idea is that we are running out of landfill space; and secondly, it is a waste of millions of additional income that would be made if we looked upon arundo in a different light.

"i confess, i feel in love with arundo in a most strange manner. our fire prevention bureau, a number of months ago, asked us and neighbors to get rid of our arundo. we had large stands of it along the soon to be famous
arosa canyon rim near sdsu.
it cost my neighbors more than $3000.00 just to get rid of our arundo. they hired the alpha project to cut the largest stand. it took two or more days. that went to the san diego landfill as trash--truckloads of it.
arundo is considered a fire hazard and an invasive species
although arundo has been in california long enough for it to be grandfathered in as a useful plant, it is now called--much to the liking of monsanto corp--an invasive.
it is considered public energy #1 or close to the list, even the devil weed.
that is how the arundo tribe was born. the more and more i studies and communed with the plant itself, it began to speak to me. that is how i came up with the idea of writing an e-book about its 102 uses.
some of these uses will be in practice at ascension 2012 at the world beat center in balboa park.

As a pilot effort for the past several years, County Parks has severely restricted the use of herbicides and pesticides in the South County region (south of the Santa Ynez Mountains from Rincon Point to Gaviota). Virtually all landscape maintenance in the 680 acres comprising the South County area is done without use of herbicides or pesticides. This fairly comprehensive proscription is occasionally reviewed on a case-by-case basis when a particular project requires very limited use of an herbicide (for example, as part of a native plant restoration project to prevent reemergence of a non-native invasive plant).
In the South County park area since July 2007 this exception has been used only once, for a project to remove invasive Arundo donax at Lookout Park in Summerland.
Eliminating regular use of broad spectrum herbicides such as glyphosate-based Roundup does increase the amount of time and cost of weed abatement.
Our experience is that the cost for mechanical weed abatement (man-hours and weed abatement equipment) is up to ten times more costly on a persquare-foot basis than for previous controlled use of a glyphosate. In developed open spaces we typically use mulch around some lawn perimeters where there are shrubs or trees, in sidewalk medians, playgrounds and small sloped area and pathways. To maintain these areas staff must monitor closely and consistently follow up with hand weeding, steaming, or re-mulching. A controlled flame with a burn bottle is used to eliminate weeds in parking lots, sidewalk cracks, and in decomposed granite areas.
