UPDATING OUR RELATIONSHIP TO ARUNDO DONAX,
THE GIANT REED
It is time now that we update our relationship to Arundo Donax, The Giant Reed. Called a noxious plant, an invasive species, now costing millions of dollars to eradicate, a boon to landfills where it fills up landfill space bringing in a mere $63.00 a ton to name it as trash, this plant has created an extreme hardship on neighbors along the Arosa Canyon Rim near San Diego State University. Thousands have been spent to kill the plant, and millions are being added to the coffers of companies like Monsanto who make a killing in profits off Arundo, having convinced for their good, many local fire departments, and park and rec departments that the best way to deal with Arundo is name it a fire hazard, and then proceed to make war, not love on the plant.
At the same time, that Arundo Donax has its face posted all over the internet as Public Enemy #1, the "Devil Weed," a plant calling forth our arsenals of herbicides that are increasingly labeled as dangerous to human as well as all biological health, we have down to earth M.D.s, community groups such as the Ojai Pesticide Free Group, and people in Topanga, who have been rallying around rather that going the Roundup Herbicide route with Arundo Donax.

DONAX IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT, AS OUR WORLD ENTERS THE DARKEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR 2011
PGE, The Portland General Electric, is not attempting to kill Arundo. Moreso, it is hiring farmers to grow it! The proposal to Make Love, Not War against Arundo, is now showing this plant as one of the most likely candidates for replacing coal at the Boardman Power Plant.
ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING PLANTS IN THE WORLD
This plant is now having its root system tweeked by scientists in Hungary. It is being touted for more than fifteen positive uses and benefits. Even scientists have got wind of Arundo and are getting into the act; the wild plant, well managed, grown as nature intended, can become our friend, rather than a foe:
AT THIS TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE WORLD TURNS TO PEACE ON EARTH
At this time of year, as the world turns to thoughts of Peace on Earth, and withdrawing our troops from Irag and Afghanistan, much to the chagrin of companies such as Dupont and Monsanto who have decades of profit statements thanks to products like Agent Orange, Dioxin, DDT, and Glysophate (i.e, the Common Roundup Herbicides and other products used to kill Arundo) is it not time to consider making Peace with this plant friend as well?
