All Things Organic

BioFach America at Natural Products Expo East
Featuring OTA’s Organic Conference
Track and Member Days Events
September 22 –September 24, 2011 Baltimore, MD

Leslie,
this year’s All Things Organic Conference features a four-session track highlighting cutting edge research relevant to organic.
The sessions on Friday, September 23rd
convene researchers and thought leaders
to discuss scientific findings of consequence to organic.

Organic Research Track Session 1:
Environmental Benefits: 8-9am
In this session, we will hear
from two researchers examining
the impact of various agricultural systems
on climate change, soil quality, and water quality.

Dr. Michel Cavigelli is a Soil Scientist with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service where he is the Lead Scientist on the Farming Systems Project. The major focus of this long-term field cropping systems study is to evaluate the sustainability of no-till, conventional till, and organic cropping systems by measuring agronomic performance, nutrient dynamics, soil biological activity and community structure, and predicting the long-term sustainability of cropping systems.

Dr. Michelle Wander is an Associate Professor and Director of the Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research considers the influence of management (tillage and cover crops, perennials, bioenergy crops, organic farming systems; crop rotation and fertilization practices) on soils, organic matter and system performance with emphasis on plant-soil-process relations. She has served on a wide variety of soil quality and water quality working groups.

The session will be moderated by Organic Farming Research Foundation’s Policy Director, Arianne Lotti.
Organic Research Track Session 2: Yields and Feeding the World:

11am-12pm
This session takes on the much repeated argument
that organic agriculture’s yields are not sufficient to feed a growing global population.

First, Jeff Moyer, Rodale Institute’s Director of Farm Operations,
will discuss yield results he has seen during his more
than 30-year tenure at the Institute ‘s Rodale Institute’s Farming Systems Trial® (FST). The FST is the longest-running side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming systems in the U.S. and one of the oldest trials in the world. Moyer is also the past chair of the National Organic Standards Board.

Next,

Cathy Greene, an Agricultural Economist with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, will offer a synthesis of yields-related research presented at the USDA Organic Farming Systems Research Conference
in Washington DC on March 16-18, 2011.

Finally, to assist us in reframing the debate about
“feeding the world,” the group will discuss the complex web of issues affecting global hunger, including political unrest, poverty, distribution constraints, and other forces that contribute to famine.

Organic Research Track Session 3: Health Benefits: 2-3pm
Recent and ongoing research indicates a link between prenatal and childhood exposure to certain pesticides and delayed cognitive development.
Two of the leaders in this area of study will discuss their work with the organic community.

Dr. Dana Boyd-Barr is a Research Professor at Emory University.
She is the co-author of two studies released this spring indicating
links between prenatal exposure to common agricultural pesticides and delayed cognitive development. Prior to joining Emory, she worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more than 20 years. She is the President of the International Society of Exposure Science and has recently concluded a five-year term as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.

Dr. Chensheng (Alex) Lu is an Associate professor of Environmental Exposure Biology with the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a highly influential research authority, whose work has included a number of watershed studies on the developmental effects of exposure to pesticides in children.

Organic Research Track Session 4: Plenary Session: 4-5pm
In our final, Plenary Session, we invite influencers from industry, academia, government and the media to share their reaction to the research presented, and discuss how they will deploy these finding in their unique spheres of influence. OTA’s Annual Meeting will follow this groundbreaking members only session.

OTA Annual Meeting: 5-6 pm
Immediately following the exclusive plenary session featuring thought leader reflections on how the latest research can move the industry forward, OTA will introduce its new Board of Directors and discuss exciting initiatives to advance organic.

“discussing Rodale Institute’s cutting-edge research pertinent to organic agriculture, connecting with friends and colleagues, and enjoying being back in Baltimore."

–Jeff Moyer, Rodale Institute’s Director of Farm Operations
