HOW TO BACK UP AND SAVE IMOVIE?
Yikes!
I am working on a an Imovie.
My Imac froze twice,
Once in Imovie.
I am concerned.
I feel like making a Draft of this work
and publishing it even though it is not finished.
I do not want to risk losing all these hours of work
invested.

IMovie is designed to automatically save - there is no "Save" or "Save As" command. However, in some circumstances iMovie doesn't always save your edits, particularly when you change a Title. Instead of "Save As", iMovie offers you an alternative - that is, "Duplicate Project". I will explain how to do this shortly.
Plus how do I go back to an old project I'm working on? It only shows the latest project I worked on when I last closed the program. Their is no "open" under "File" to open past projects.
When you open iMovie it will open at the same Event and Project screen that you last closed with. If a Project is open, click on the heading on the left side of the project window, named "Project Library". A list will magically appear showing all your Projects, each with a single bar of thumbnails. Click on one of these Projects, then click on "Edit Project" at the top of the list (it's in the same place as "Project Library", but has now replaced it). Once you have opened a Project in this way, you will again see the header "Project Library" (replacing "Edit Project").
To duplicate a project - while in Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), right-click (or Control-click) on the name of the project you wish to duplicate. Now select "Duplicate Project" from the menu that appears. A copy of your project will be created by iMovie, with the number 1 appended to the original name - you can re-name this if desired. Duplicating projects is a handy way to save different versions from time to time, particularly when you've made numerous edits that you don't want to have to recreate if a problem arises with the current project. You can always delete the duplicates once your project is complete and properly saved by iMovie.
Note that projects have a relatively small file size, as they reference their corresponding Event (or Events) - they don't copy the video clips, but simply contain instructions regarding the clips to use, transitions, titles, voiceovers etc.

If your computer's startup disk is low on disk space, you can use a secondary hard drive to save, back up, or archive your projects.
If you are creating a new project, simply select the secondary volume as the destination in the save dialog. If you do not see the disk in the destination list, click the disclosure triangle in the save window and scroll to the left to see all available volumes (see Figure 1).

To copy an iMovie project to another disk:
1. Quit iMovie if it is open.
2. Locate the project folder in the Finder.
3. Drag the project folder to the other disk.
Note: You must move the complete project folder, intact, to the other disk in order to successfully copy the project. The project folder has the same name as the project listed in the iMovie window. This folder includes the iMovie project file, as well as a Media folder, which contains all of the clips associated with this project. If you don't copy all of these items, the project may no longer be readable in iMovie.
Once you have copied the project, try opening it in iMovie to ensure that it copied to the other disk successfully.
Important Considerations
Drive speed, bandwidth, and format are important when editing an iMovie project. Keep the following in mind when transferring a project to a volume other than the internal hard drive:
Zip drives, floppy drives, hard drives connected via USB, and file server volumes are too slow to support direct editing of iMovie projects. These storage devices should only be used to back up and archive your projects.
The drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) or Mac OS Standard (HFS) format. Copying your iMovie project to disks that use DOS, UFS, or other formats may result in a project that is no longer useable in iMovie.
When using drives connected to your computer with FireWire, connect the drive directly to the computer. If playback appears to stutter, or if iMovie indicates that the "disk responded slowly" consider disconnecting other FireWire devices.
Disk fragmentation can cause playback issues within iMovie. If playback appears to stutter, or if iMovie indicates that the "disk responded slowly", consider defragmenting the disk using a defragmentation utility.

Moving all iMovie data to other computer

I want to move ALL my iMovie stuff to another computer, all projects and events. I have searched the help and forum, and it's not crystal clear how to do it. It seems I should not use Finder, but iMovie itself. Here is the way I think I should do it
1. in iMovie on computer 1, move (command-drag) each event and each project to the external HDD.
2. in IMovie on computer 2, move each event and each project to the internal HDD.
Is that correct?

This is correct.
However, if you prefer, you can leave everything on the external drive.

Thanks. I just installed a new big HDD in my MacBook so that I can keep all pictures an movies on the internal HDD.

When you command drag your Projects to the external drive, run the Consolidate Command. This will make sure you have all the Event files for the Project, and will also make sure you have any photos or music that you referenced in the project.

Do you mean before or after moving?
