Raw Milk May Have Less Than A .0002% Risk For Food-borne Illness;
Less Than Pasteurized Milk!
Dr. Mercola comments on Daily Finance article: "The War Over Raw Milk Heats Up" at mercola.com
Date: 8/24/2010 2:43:47 AM ( 14 y ) ... viewed 2543 times From Mercola.com: "Millions of Americans get sick every year from eating contaminated foods. Among them, at least 325,000 will be hospitalized and 5,000 will die, according to FDA statistics."
I asked CDC-INFO and they responded: "An estimated 76 million cases of foodborne disease occur each year in the United States. The great majority of these cases are mild and cause symptoms for only a day or two. Some cases are more serious, and CDC estimates that there are 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths related to foodborne diseases each year."
Mercola.com: "Many foods are responsible for these illnesses.
Yet, only one food -- raw milk -- has been unfairly singled out and targeted by the FDA, the USDA and even the FBI as a 'health risk' worthy of armed raids and crackdowns -- a food that also happens to be so low on the food-borne illness risk scale it's hardly measurable. ... less than .000002 (sic) percent of the 76 million people who contract a food-borne illness in the United States each year!"
(Although the figure at Mercola.com is .000002 it should be .0002 because two zeros need to be dropped when converting a decimal fraction to a percentage.)

Why Raw Milk is Superior to Pasteurized Milk:
"While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that raw milk can carry disease-causing bacteria, what they completely overlook is the fact that these bacteria are the result of industrial farming practices that lead to diseased animals, which may then in turn produce contaminated milk."

on Thu Sep 8, 2011 8:48 pm referring to the early movement that was supported by Straus to have states require pasteurization on milk:
"Interesting history. I guess the point is that Straus was a big promoter of pasteurization as a practical solution to the problem of tainted milk, even though health professionals knew that certified raw milk was better.
Health professionals often believed certified milk to be as safe as pasteurized—or even safer. But certification was costly, relying on large teams of milk inspectors. Since widespread distribution was impossible, a certified-milk standard, in Straus’s view, was merely 'theoretical.'
Straus was probably responsible for instilling the fear of raw milk in the minds of the public and officials."
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site says:
"Although precise data are not available, it is thought that less than 1% of milk sold to consumers in the United States has not been pasteurized."

It amazes me that this "war (as it has been called) is being waged apparently/obviously against the raw milk farmers, private associations and the like for less than 1% of the milk market and which (if you understand what I am presenting here) is an illusion from a business perspective because the dedicated raw milk lovers are not going to compromise their health and well being for (what Dr. Mercola has stated is) dead fluids! To put it more directly there is no possible future financial gain to be had for big dairy in this! However there may be a financial interest to try and stop whatever lost sales that may be due to those former pasteurized dairy consumers who cross over to (& into greener pastures as the source of their) grass-fed milk that is kept whole and raw just like nature made it! (And I would add just like Jesus and all his brothers and sisters enjoyed it 2,000 years ago!)
Once again the the stop-gate measure is futile because the raw milk truth is out and that truth is more "contagious" than any so called cold or flu virus (see my other blogs on those subjects)!
More math: 116 divided by 76,000,000 is 0.0000015263157894736842 and then that figure has to loose two places when stated as a percentage:
0.00015263157894736842%
