"The average baby uses 5.000 diapers
before being potty trained--95%
of which end up in landfills.
Disposable diapers make up
3.4 million tons of waste a year in the U.S. Alone.
That's an average of 50 millon diapers a day!
We hope to change some of these numbers
by introducing Bamboosie Biodegradable diapers."

his is super cool. Some friends of mine in New York are working on the packaging for a brand new product: disposable diapers that are fully biodegradable and sustainable. I can’t wait to try them.

The design team for the diapers would love your feedback on the package designs. So they created a survey here. Go take a peek. Bonus: if you fill out the survey, you’re automatically entered to win a luxe gift basket from Aveda. Nice!

I love this sort of thing both as a mom and as a designer. I’m intrigued by the new, earth-friendly, but still convenient diaper. (Guess what the new diapers are made of? You’ll find out in the survey.) And I love seeing the design process happening. The package design options are great — I’ll be curious to see which one they end up going with. If you’re curious like me, you should definitely check out the survey.

I filled out the survey because as a cloth diapering mom, I was JUST wondering when something like this was going to come out on the market! What a great concept. Please keep us informed on their progress!

I’m so glad you passed this on! I took the survey and really loved the packaging of the second option. I also love the idea of a product that’s as convenient as traditional disposable diapers, but much better for the environment! I’m really interested in trying these.

Wow! Fascinating idea! I run a giveaway site for mom/baby products, and I would love to do a giveaway of their product. I have a child who cannot use disposables because they do not breathe and she ends up with awful heat rashes (no matter what products we use). Many of our followers are also interested in cloth diapers, eco-friendly products, and products that are gentle on our little ones. Is there a way to contact them about doing a giveaway at some point?

We use Nature Babycare diapers and LOVE them! They’re eco-friendly (way more so than 7th Generation). We also use Earth Baby, a compostable diaper service! They pick up dirty dipes and compost them using less energy than we’d use washing cloth diapers. They’re a SF Bay Area company, but hopefully they’ll go national. We love Nature Babycare diapers and Earth Baby SOOOOO much. (You don’t have to use Earth Baby to use Nature Babycare, either… buy them on Amazon or diapers.com!)

My concern is that without a composting site, diapers like these are still hauled to landfills where the lack of oxygen and micro organisms prevents them from actually biodegrading. The idea that biodegradable and compostable products break down in landfills is a myth that needs to be better understood.

We use cotton cloth diapers and make our own cotton wipes because everything that gets thrown out contributes to the problem. I am glad that composting is becoming more common and applaud the service that you use for presenting a real solution rather than a phony one.

Alyssa- You’re totally right! We definitely know that they won’t break down in a landfill, but many people don’t. We’re thrilled that a company like Earth Baby is around to compost our diapers.

There is a company called Gdiapers that makes a similar product. But I love the idea, I hope the other kind fade out.

Love the idea! Took the survey! Hopefully they come out soon. My son may be out of diapers by the time it hits the stores but maybe a future baby will be lucky enough for us to try them! =)

I do have to say, that I am very excited that they are coming out with a more consumer friendly version of disposables that are better for the environment. Every little bit helps, however, being a cloth diapering mom (and very environmentally conscious) I just have a couple comments. 1. cloth diapers are SO convenient, I prefer them to disposables! The types that they make these days are all-in-one are EASY AS PIE. 2. yes, these are better than disposables, but still not the best. These still produce a lot more packaging and other waste purely by manufacturing them and buying many packages throughout a child’s life. Also, people will still throw the poop in the trash. Poop belongs in toilets, not in landfills.
Gotta make my shout out for cloth :)

I agree with you, except that cloth is convenient! I use modern ones on my twins, but it is still waaaay more messy, smelly and bulky to use cloth…

what are the cloth diapers you use that are “easy as pie”? I am due in september and overwhelmed with options. what is really “best”?!?!?!

I commented in response to Kate above, but wanted to add to your post that I agree that cloth is easy and much better than any disposable alternative. I’d also point out that as I said above, once products reach the landfills, they have a difficult time breaking down even if they are built to be biodegradable.

I am so excited there is a new product coming out. Moms out there are making their voices heard that there needs to be something better for the environment than Huggies and Pampers! I have used Gdiapers, Naturecare and Seventh Generation. I hope this product succeeds!
