The Green Revolution: Some Lessons
Having seen food production advance while hunger widens, we are now
prepared to ask: under what conditions are greater harvests doomed to
failure in eliminating hunger?

First, where farmland is bought and sold like any other commodity and
society allows the unlimited accumulation of farmland by a few,
superfarms replace family farms and all of society suffers.

Second, where the main producers of food-small farmers and farm
workers-lack bargaining power relative to suppliers of farm inputs and
food marketers, producers get a shrinking share of the rewards from
farming.

Third, where dominant technology destroys the very basis for future
production, by degrading the soil and generating pest and weed problems,
it becomes increasingly difficult and costly to sustain yields.

Under these three conditions, mountains of additional food could not
eliminate hunger, as hunger in America should never let us forget. The
alternative is to create a viable and productive small farm agriculture
using the principles of agroecology. That is the only model with the
potential to end rural poverty, feed everyone, and protect the
environment and the productivity of the land for future generations.

THE IMPACT OF LOSS OF OIL OF AGRICULTURE
THE NEED TO SHIFT TO SMALL FARMER
LESS PETRO BASED

BACKGROUND

With the Green Revolution, farming becomes petro-dependent. Some of the
more recently developed seeds may produce higher yields even without
manufactured inputs, but the best results require the right amounts of
chemical fertilizer, pesticides, and water. So as the new seeds spread,
petrochemicals become part of farming. In India, adoption of the new
seeds has been accompanied by a sixfold rise in fertilizer use per acre.
Yet the quantity of agricultural production per ton of fertilizer used in
India dropped by two-thirds during the Green Revolution years. In fact,
over the past thirty years the annual growth of fertilizer use on Asian
rice has been from three to forty times faster than the growth of rice
yields.

Ed Shultz, MSNBC Muchraker
is on top of his game.

Tonight he had on Noel Davis, a man who has been seeking
funding to make parts for wind turbines for the energy department.
The parts are currently being made in China. The US will
not give him the loan he needs.

The words energy independence are an issue
of national security.

They are also an issue of Food Security.

Last night I attended a on the mark talk on
being the local San Diego-Los Angeles Foodshed.

What is a Foodshed?
This is a concept whose time has come.

I will explain in the morning when I will have
my more energy.

HERE IS THE STORY OF NOEL DAVI
FROM ED's MAY 4 PlayBOOK

What is up with this?

Give Noel Davis the start up capital he needs.

NOW TO BUILD THE BUIDGE

Watch for Ed Shultz to be on top of this one.

I also watched a boat tourist captain who has been
in business for 80 years talking about going belly up.

What do we do with may new unemployed
that are gong to be created because of the corporate
takeover of the energy department as well as big Ag?

Look to the Foodshed concept, building local
food supply in the local areas.

San Diego, a place that caught the attention of
Michelle OBama and launched an extended Earth Week
that ended with a two day conference that had
more than 500 in the seats each day
at the 2010 Cultivating Food Jusitce Conference at SDSU
ten days later, is the place for forward looking
Washington to place its trust.

What are we going to do with all the new homeless
of Louisana due to the new Gulf economic Dead Zone?

I want to see PB taking on at least twenty of these
damaged by their neglectful disrespect of environment
and giving not $5,000 each, but $100,000 each.

I would like 20 to be underwriting to Go West to
San Diego and join us in a new career--that
can lead to energy independence wherever it is
insituted.

We need 1000 and 1000 more local organic farmers
and we need them now.

Bring us 20 of the injured from the BP disaster.
Give them start up capital now. Let the US government
lend them the money now, and collect from BP as the
slow moving defeated giant is forced to pay its bills
back to us.

The US Government, sad to say, is going to again
have to be the loan agent. They did it for the banks.
Now do it for the new future farmers of America.

Local, organic is in. Foodsheds are in.

Michelle Obama saw the writing on the wall when
she came to the IRC New Roots Garden.

The IRC has already set the tone.

Following Katrina, they gave "refugees" of Louisana
a new start in San Diego. Now is the time for IRC,
and the California Endownment, the group that hosted
Michelle, to make room in City Heights for a pilot project
that offers comfort and a new home for twenty former
Louisana residents made economically homeless by
Corporate greed.

BP, step up to the plate.
Doing something good for your own PR.

We have a ton of farmers here who can teach the
new arrivals, and land where they can farm.
Let's get going with this.

Ed Shultz, please get in back of this project.

Thank you.

SAN DIEGO GROWERS PROJECT
at TIERRA MIGUEL FOUNDATION FARM

From the TIerra Miguel Website

Imagine building a local food economy where those working within it can afford the foods they produce, process and transport. Think of a permanent farmers’ market building, a Farmers’ Market Hub, which includes food processing facilities, space available to farmers for food storage, packing facilities and other distribution related infrastructure. Envision commercial food distributors who sell a ‘local food line’ of fresh fruit and vegetables coming directly from local and regional farmers to institutions such as schools, hospitals, prisons, and large employers. Picture farmers working in partnership to bring freshly picked produce to a local elementary school classroom while also arranging for the children to visit the farm. And perhaps most critically, consider underserved populations, whose neighborhoods currently lack places to buy healthy food, getting access to the freshest, tastiest, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, which have the power to change eating habits and spur demand for better food from schools to offices, corner stores to supermarkets. Many possibilities exist that would address the needs of our failing food system (Zajfen, 2008).

Strategy: The San Diego Growers’ Project will explore many possibilities to build sustainable regional food systems by building on-farm capacity, developing local distribution infrastructure, and creating healthy institutional food environments. The San Diego Growers’ Project will assist a diverse and wide ranging group of farmers in developing their capacity to meet the needs of larger food purchasing institutions.
Operations: The Center for Food & Justice and Tierra Miguel Farm will work with farmers, food advocates and institutional food consumers to build a new food economy. The primary focus of this project will be to outreach, educate, coordinate and assist farmers working collectively to market their crops either through a formalized legal cooperative, a more informal collective of farmers addressing best management strategies, or by partnering with a third-party organization that markets, distributes, or sells food on behalf of the farm group. Farmers will utilize collaborative business models to address critical problems faced by farmers such as distribution, processing, marketing, and business development.
