I spend some time on Friday being introduced
to the writing of Robert Baskin who now works
for the Obama Administration investigating fraud.
This seems to be a area of expertise for this
excellent investigative journalist who has won many
national awards.
When she worked for ABC I-Team, Robert Baskin
effected the bottomline of Whole Foods Market
and the Organic Trade in General when she pointed
out Comtamination of Organic products with lax systems
of quality control coming from China.
These investigations took place in 2008.
I never read any following up, but it appears
that Whole Food Market stock is once again on the rise.
I cannot say for sure what was the relationship between
Whole Food Market Stock, the general economy bust,
and Roberta Baskin's stories on ABC.
That would take some investigating.
A number of issues come up for me this morning.
One has to do with the choice of stories that watchdog
Journalists go after. The general theme of labeling of
Foods is fascinating.
The FDA and other Federal Agencies feel they are protecting
the public by not telling shoppers who products have or do not
have ingredients tainted with GMO's.
I heard on the other hand there was a LA TIMES articles
that reported that the soy lethithin in many products
does have GMO's. Many of these products are under the radar
of the public. Many of these products are again sold in
Whole Foods Market are other health food stores across the nation.
If a product is not marked as organic soy lechithin, because
of the proliferation of GMO and GE ingredients, there is a good
likelihood that these so named organic products do in fact
have GMO or GE ingredients.
On the other hand, the no one of the calibre of Robert Baskin
has made an issue of the general question, does the public
have a right to know, so each person can decide what quality
of foods they want to eat?
The thought also crosses my mind, how much was
Robert Baskin going after the organic in 2008 a pushback issue?
What determines the stories that crossed here desk and the stories
the ABC I-Team decided to investigate?
Where industries does ABC support?
