OUR HISTORY
ABOUT IVOH
Images and Voices of Hope began with a single conversation in New York City in June, 1999. During the preceding spring and summer of 1998, three organizations had begun talking about the impact of public story telling and public message making on society. They were The Visions of a Better World Foundation, the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization and the Center for research on Appreciative Inquiry at Case Western Reserve (see also: http://appreciativeinquiry.case.edu/).
Each organization shared a belief that real transformation in the world will come not from problem solving the old world, but from valuing and building on what gives life and vitality to the world we have now, and, by creating clear images and stories of the way forward.
The first conversation of IVOH, with 180 people in media and related fields, was held in Manhattan. The principles of that conversation became the principles for all Images and Voices of Hope conversations that were to take place in the future. Each would be strength-based, conversation-based discussions, involving everyone in the room. There would be no "sage on the stage".
Since that first conversation there have been over 50 more held in cities throughout the world - from Kuala Lumpur to Halifax; from Santiago, Chile to St. Petersburg, Russia. For a complete list of cities, click here.
Each conversation is different, with the distinct flavor of the very different communities in which they are held. The conversations are designed to respond to the needs and issues of the local communities. Those organizing the conversations have worked with local partners such as WLRN television in Miami, the National Conference on Community and Justice and Columbia College in Chicago, and the Rhode Island School of Design and The Humanity Foundation in Providence.
In June 2008, IVOH began a series of Thought Leader Dialogues with those in media to look at the topic of "Personal Mission - Social Impact". This first International Dialogues for Thoughts Leaders in Media - Journalism was sponsored and hosted by the Fetzer Institute with additional funding from the Carnegie Foundation.
In May 2008, IVOH became an independent 501(C) 3 organization.
