Shifting the Nature of the World

Shifting the Nature of the World:

Dr. Robert Fraley, Ph.D., the father of agricultural biotechnology,
spoke on "Sustainable Solutions for Doubling Crop Productivity by 2030"
at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
176th Annual Meeting in San Diego. AAAS is the most prestigious
science organization in the nation with members rooted in
national policy. After his talk, I approached Robert Fraley with the idea
that It's time for GMO and Organic Lovers to talk.
I approached him with the idea of lessening
tension through dialogue.
Robert Fraley, Executive Vice President
and Chief Technology Officer at the Monsanto Company.
the man who has influenced the lives of more than 12 million farmers
on more than 282 million acres in twenty-three countries worldwide.
said yes to the idea.

He planted a beet seed in a sugar cane
bagasse pot to grow out the intention
as did four other key players through the day.
I handed him a copy of the
Monsanto Company literature
that was placed on the seats.
I asked him to write me a note.
He wrote:
"Leslie,
Let's close the gap!'

Robert, Leslie, and Tami February 21, 2010.
around 1:25 PM, Sunday afternoon.
Room 6C, San Diego Convention Center,
AAAS 2010 Annual Meeting. Robert is Dr. Robert T. Fraley,
Chief Tecnology Officer for Monsanto Company,
Leslie Is Your Enchanted Gardener, Plant Your Dream
popular blogger, and
Tami is Tami Craig Schilling, Director,
Strategic Communications & Operations,
Monsanto Company, Public Affairs.

The Cartoon character heading for Hollywood
is KEEP THE BEET MEDIA STAR,
the World's First Talking Beet Plant. As the story goes,
once a contented beet who lived a happy life on the farm,
the noted national Czarina of Foods and columnist in
the Space of Love Magazine, left the farm as most of us.
She now travels with Your Enchanted Gardener,
her Chauffeur, where she roots for various dreams.
Her latest Seed Dream: Initiate a dialogue between
GMO and Organic Lovers. We can lessen in the
heated relationship as we hear each other.

AAAS had a Program called
a Dialogue for Science, Ethics, and Religion.
KEEP THE BEET says it is time to begin a Dialogue
between Science, Ethics, and Food.

I approached Robert T Fraley with the idea.
I told him I felt I could lessen the tension.
He said he liked where I was coming form.
We talked more. He planted a seed toward that intent
in a Keep the Beet Plant Your Dream pot. He introduced me
to Tami Craig Schilling. This to was a very positive meeting.
Then, I asked Robert to write me a note. I handed him s pen.
He wrote, "Leslie, Let's close the gap!" Rpbert Fraley.

The Seed Dream for the dialogue was planted.

in the History of Peace on Earth

I have often thought that if the world
were on a first name basis, it would be easier
to create a world of friends. Robert, Leslie,
Tami, these are our first names.

That was one of the first questions
I asked ALICE HUANG, a board member of the
Association for the Advancement of Science
when we first met at the Awards Ceremony
at the 176th AAAS Meeting
20 February 2010-San Diego.

For those who want to be in the know,
AAAS is pronounced "Triple A" "S."
AAAS is the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
It is the most presdigious membership organization
of science in the U.S. and the world.
If you go to this page you can see the organization
not only has a U.S. membership, but also
a Canadian Membership and a global membership.

http://www.aaas.org/membership/

Alice and I were both seated in the front row of the
auspicious evening event.

"May I seat next to you?" I asked.
"Yes, Alice said, "it is a shame to not have
the front row seats taken." She said that
or something near to it.

I was carrying my Olympus SP57OUZ
camera around my neck. It allows me to be
a Pavarottzi from across the room if I want,
as in this shot, but it is most fun to sit up close
to the front, especially when a person's reason for being alive
is to shift the Nature of the World for the better.

The pre-estimates of attendance at the American Association
for the Advancement of Sciece (AAAS) Annual Meeting
were 8000 with attendees coming from 80 countries.
I never stopped to ask Molly McElroy, the lovely woman
who appeared to monitor Press Registration.

Attending the AAAS 2010 Meeting was a mind blower.
My life may never be the same, nor the life of our world.

Dr. Robert Fraley Ph.D, spoke on Sunday
His topic was SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
FOR DOUBLING CROP PRODUCTIVITY BY 2030.

http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=1576502

While he spoke, I had a front row seat again.
At the same time there were around 70 young people
and some of their mom's and pop's who were
a bit concerned about the presence of Dr. Fraley.

It was not that they knew him by name.
The flyer that circulated pre Dr Fraley's
speaking engagement, as one of hundeds
of the world's most esteemed scientists,
just said,
"Speak Out Against Monsanto!"
The corporation responsible
fr GMO's, rBGH, PCBs, persecuting small farmers,
agent orange, and more..."

Dr. Fraley was the reason, I too
changed my life around between
February 18-22, 2010 to attend the meeting.
My life as a science
writer is totally and completely absorbed with
seeds, and things like hummingbirds that
grow from eggs. Monsanto Company is the
owner of 90% of all the seed companies in the world.

Dr. Fraley is the Chief Technology Officer
for Monsanto Company. He overseas Monsanto Agricultural
enterprises in more than 25 nations. He oversees
millions of acres of agriculture. He was quoted
in the recent Forbes article that named Monsanto
the Company of the year.

http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0118/americas-best-company-10-gmos-dupont-p...

'By marrying conventional breeding with genetic engineering, Monsanto aims to produce more food for less money on the same amount of land. Conventional breeding--these days a high-tech matchmaking process guided by DNA sequencing machines--will help boost maximum yields. Biotech genes will ensure that pests, weeds, drought and other problems don't destroy a crop's potential, Grant says.

"It is like computers in the 1960s," says Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto's chief technology officer. "We are just at the beginning of the explosion of technology we are going to see." Adds Grant: "Our pipeline is richer and deeper than it has ever been." A new corn variety that includes eight genes for pest resistance and herbicide tolerance could become the company's next big product. It is due out this spring. Also in testing are drought-tolerant corn, corn that needs less fertilizer and higher-yielding biotech soybeans and corn.

BIOENGINEERING TO CROP UP WHEN
SCIENCE GROUP MEETS

FROM THE UNION TRIBUNE ARTICLE

If the titans of agribusiness are right, the world is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the way food is grown. But if history is any indication, genetically modified crops will need to overcome a lot of skepticism to spark a consumer revolution.

That uncertainty is fueled by the mixed record of current bioengineered crops — mainly soybeans, corn, canola — in meeting lofty targets set by backers of high-tech seeds. Vitamin-enhanced foods remain out of reach, it’s unclear how much biotechnology has boosted plant production, and a recent study said genetically engineered plants have increased usage of herbicides.

IDEA FOR THE DIALOGUE

1. No spitting, cussing, or yelling.
2. Tami, Robert, and I will begin the dialogue.
3. Four others planted beet seeds in this pot
made of Biosmart Sugar Cane Bagasse. They too
will be invited into the dialogue. The dialogue will
begin here on the Plant Your Dream Blog, and
advance to a Facebook page.

4. I will involve and invite questions and answers
with the intent of allowing the Seed Dream of this dialogue
to foster a new level of listening, a new level of consciously
planting the future of food.

This was a photo that I took when I went looking for
the Monsanto booth at BIO 2008.

I made a friendship with a gardener from Saint Louis.
There were organic seeds of cilantro at the booth where
the cards for Monsanto were placed. I took this as a sign
of the future. Through the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food
we will look at all sides of the issues of Agriculture. I believe
the future will be organic. I want to hear the real science
behind other agriculture strategies for feeding ourselves
and the world.
