Carbon Storage?
CCS or Carbon Capture Storage; or sequestration has become a great hope for many people... Even some oil companies and governments have jumped on board!

In some way this CCS has became an indulgence certificate; for those with a position on anthropogenic global warming... The solution fit even the oil companies; since some petroleum engineers jumped in with the idea of re-injecting the offending carbon dioxide into both both old oil reservoirs and some deep saline aquifers...
Yet many engineers who ought to know better had they done the basic calculations jumped on board! With plenty of both government and private money; many researchers instead of studying the very feasibility of the process, which had been taken for granted in some circles...
With the present political economic atmosphere; most agree that the task was overwhelming both in physical needs and costs; plus the desire to save the planet; some people often jump at any possible solution...
Reality is so often more difficult than many political dreams... What was rarely calculated yet often discussed is the rate of injection per well and the cumulative volume of injection in a particular geological formation; which are part of the overall process!
In the Society of Petroleum Engineers New Orleans Meeting , Oct 2009; addressed the feasibility of sequestering CO2 as a means of emissions management... The conclusion was negative! The end result was that it would take 10 to 20 times the underground reservoir volume than envisioned by most; which renders geological sequestration of CO2 a profoundly non-feasible option for the management of CO2 emissions...
The Kyoto Protocol or any successor accords would imply orders of magnitude far larger than anything possible with CCS! Without going into the boring details; it is sufficient to say that with CCS; there is not a practical means to provide any substantive reduction in CO2 emissions, as some believe!
