Researchers have looked at the role diet may play in arthritis. There are some scientific reasons to think that the foods you eat could affect certain kinds of arthritis. Evidence shows that excessive weight and the type of diet you follow may influence symptoms of certain types of arthritis and related conditions.
The diet, as prescribed by Ayurveda, rests on the fact that arthritis is the end result of toxins which slowly accumulate in various parts of the body and cause pain and swelling. Since the cause of different types of arthritis is different therefore the treatment is also different in different cases:
- Rheumatoid arthritis:
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused due to an immune reaction triggered by an infection which usually infects during childhood and the symptoms appear later in the adult phase. An antioxidant rich diet suggested is to boost the body's defense system and prevent the accumulation of toxins.
- Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the old age arthritis which is usually due to degeneration of the joints. In this type of arthritis, the antidote diet is calcium rich diet with lots of antioxidants. Eating lot of citrus fruits is also recommend as they are rich in vitamin C which is important in the development of normal cartilage.
- Gout
Gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis, and accounts for 5 percent of all cases of arthritis. Gout is due to accumulation of high levels of uric acid crystals in the joints due to which the body becomes acidic. Gout is characterized by sudden, severe bouts of redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and inflammation in one or more joints. The treatment is to keep the body alkaline with a lot of alkaline foods like figs, sprouts, vegetables (except tomato and egg plant). Avoid alcohol or drink alcohol in moderation and drink lots of water and other fluids.
