Plant Spirit Encounters
Slowly, I am learning how to work with plant spirits. I have made three plant spirit allies so far.

A few months ago I asked her if it would be possible for her to teach me to become a practitioner as well; she said she'd give it some serious thought.
A few days ago, I worked with this practitioner again and she told me she had been thinking about my request. I told her that in the intervening months since I asked her, I've consciously worked with three different plant spirits; she responded that I did not need her to teach me, I'd already "made contact" with plant spirits on my own.
I have been going about this very slowly, not exactly knowing what I am doing but trusting that working with different plant spirits will unfold for me as I am ready and as the need arises.
My first conscious effort to connect with a plant spirit took place on March 21, 2009 (just after the Spring Equinox). That morning I worked with a shamanic healer. During the session, I told the shaman that becoming a plant spirit medicine practitioner seemed to require a lot of work as one has to get to know many plants and the spirit the plants carry. She told me it didn't have to be hard work, it could be easy if I was open to it; she advised me to try to work with plants I was already familiar with.
I was getting ready to head home after the session when Spirit told me to burn some sage in the car. I used a metal spoon for a mini altar and put small pieces of sage from my sage wand on it along with a bit of tobacco, and some petals from a cherry tree blossom I had found that day.
Taking the shaman's advice, and without knowing what I was doing, I asked out loud for the Spirit of Sage to help me cleanse my car. Immediately, I felt strong jolts of energy run up my back and saw a brief vision of a brilliant light--in the light was a beautiful golden-haired woman. The woman then "zoomed" in close and I saw her smiling face bathed in white light rush past me; she seemed to be very mirthful and playful. Wow! I then lit the sage with a match and cleansed myself and my car. I drove home with a sense of wonder about what had happened.
The next day I burned some more sage to cleanse a room in my house--I asked the Spirit of Sage to help me and her face appeared to me again. Then I burned a bit of cedar and asked the Spirit of Cedar to assist the Spirit of Sage to cleanse the room; I saw a brief vision of a rather gnarly-looking being--he had sharp knobs sticking out all over his tree-like, brown body that looked like it was covered with bark, and had a very sharp, pointy knob for a nose and brilliant black eyes.
I was startled by Spirit of Cedar's appearance and I thought with some affection "wow, you're so gnarly-looking" and he scowled at me fiercely with his eyes burning. I gathered that Spirit of Cedar could be a bit temperamental so I quickly apologized and explained I meant no insult or disrespect and that I thought he looked very interesting and wonderful.
I have continued to work with both the Spirit of Sage and the Spirit of Cedar and call upon them frequently when I am opening Sacred Space or cleansing myself or my home.
The third Plant Spirit I encountered was Spirit of Star Jasmine. Every spring the Star Jasmine plants bloom all over the neighborhood. The flowers are very small yet are clustered together in large numbers and the fragrance is very powerful. All of my life up until this time I have had difficulty with the scent of jasmine. This May, with the first spring blooming of the plants, I asked Spirit of Star Jasmine to work with me so that I could appreciate the fragrance of the flowers rather than finding it overwhelming. Immediately after this request I saw a vision of Star Jasmine Spirit as a smiling cherubic baby face nestled among the huge petals of a bright red flower (why red, when the petals of star jasmine are white, I do not know). Spirit then instructed me how to make a flower essence.
I've never made flower essence before; Spirit gave me step-by-step instructions: 3 blooms of star jasmine were picked from plants that grow in my front yard, and thanks spoken to them for sacrificing themselves for my healing. The blooms were put in a glass container filled with filtered water. This was set in the sun for two hours. The flowers were removed from the water and buried in the soil next to the plants they were picked from. The water--now "essence of star jasmine"--was poured into a small glass spray bottle that had a small amount of homeopathic remedy in it* The excess water was poured over the buried flowers. Prayers and thanks were spoken to the Spirit of Star Jasmine, Spirit, and Mother Earth before and after the making of the essence.
I've been spraying Star Jasmine flower essence in my mouth 3X daily since its creation with thanks spoken each time; not only does the scent of the Star Jasmine blooms no longer bother me, I enjoy the smell!
Blessings to my friends and allies, the Plant Spirits!
*The homeopathic remedy in which I added the Star Jasmine essence: "Earth", NET Remedies #1, distributed by N.E.T. Inc, Carlsbad, CA 02010. I use this remedy to ground myself.
