A last ditch effort at the "doctor's orders"
Date: 6/14/2009 10:33:40 AM ( 15 y ) ... viewed 69972 times It's been so long since I've written but only because I had nothing new. The BV was under control to the point where I could have a relatively normal sex life, which is to say I would have to treat myself with the Vit C or Peroxide or L Reuteri or some combination of the 3 after having sex and maybe a few days later I would be able to have sex again without worrying about odor. In January this year I decided to try some new Birth Control pills to see if it would help my acne problem so I had to go get a pap and exam. The dr. told me (without actually testing anything) that I had what looked like yeast and bv. He prescribed flagyl and 4 doses of Diflucan - 1 pill now, 1 pill in 7 days (after taking the flagyl which was a 7-day script) and 2 refills on the diflucan. Seemed excessive to me. I advised him I would prefer not to take the antibiotic for bv since I felt overuse of antibiotics had caused this bacterial imbalance in my body to begin with. He gave me the same old song and dance about wiping front to back and not douching and not putting dirty things in my vagina (I am 35 years old, not 12 mind you)... and I advised him I am perfectly aware of all of this and have been for many a number of years. I told him I feel the medical establishment's problem with actually curing this problem is they are completely ignoring the "replenishment" step. You can kill the bacteria but since the body depends on a balance then you must replenish the good bacteria you have killed or there will be no cure.
He scowled at me as if I was questioning his authority and told me to take the pills. I decided I would go ahead and try the flagyl again but this time I would use the L/Reuteri afterward to try and replenish the good bacteria because that was something I hadn't done in the past.
Let me say that I am now completely convinced that I am not crazy and NOT making up the fact that Flagyl makes it worse and may have been the cause of this problem to begin with!
About 3 days after finishing the entire round of these pills (and spending that entire week suffering from migraines, nausea, and a stupor-like brain fog that made it nearly impossible to get through a day of work) I had a raging case of BV and nothing I was doing was making any difference at all. The odor was so bad I was afraid other people could smell it, I would use the peroxide in the morning and could smell it again by afternoon. The Vitamin C only burned and itched and did nothing to help the symptoms, the L.Reuteri helped but not like it had before. And in the meantime my pap results came back from the lab and they called to tell me I was HPV positive and showed some signs of dysplasia or pre-cancerous cells on my cervix. I was completely freaked out and didn't know if I should continue the agressive treatment I was using to get the BV under control or not.
I went for a cervical biopsy in Feb. and it came back ok - no dysplasia at all. The biopsy irritated the BV more and I have been struggling ever since to get it under control. It's June now and it is finally under control again, I still have no new treatments to use and I can say the most effective I have is the L.Reuteri, I am sure the secret to a cure lies in replacing the right kind of bacteria.
I checked into the buffergel again - they published the results of a trial saying that the women with bv they had tested it on - it had cured 80% of them after a week of daily use. Promising, the question is whether it came back later... still, I am excited to try this product and they are still not close to releasing it. The last post on their "news" page says they are preparing to test it for the efficacy of an aids prevention product in Feb. 2009.
Anyway, the absolute point of this post, if nothing else, is to underscore that the traditional medical approach is not going to work in this situation. Don't give up on the natural way.
