The End of Styrofoam
"The simple fact is that when you drop
a Styrofoam cup onto the street,
you're causing more damage than you would by dropping
a stick of dynamite into the ocean.
You set in motion an invasion
of thousands of killer plastibots that will cause
death and destruction for centuries to come."

JP and CELESTE OF PEACE PIES
are introduced to EARTHWARE disposable ware
at the HILLCREST FARMERS' MARKET April 25, 2009.
I like this because it can be fed to earthworms
and used as potting containers.
I am dong experiments on both these uses.
It is time to go beyond syrofoam uses.

I am starting garden projects using
the samples of packaging that
ANTHONY RUSSO gave me
at the SDSU Earth Day, April 22.
So far I am planting seedlings
in some of the pots.
I also explored having kids
decorate the pots at our
first Last Sunday of the Month
BEET KEEPERS, RETURN! '09
gathering April 26, here
at the
ENCHANTED GARDEN INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY.
I transfered some beet seedlings into pots.
I am also introducing these alternatives
to Styrofoam to my farmer friends
at the Hillcrest Farmers' Market.
I began with introducing them
to J.P of PEACE PIES.
I will also have samples at the
upcoming CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE
CONFERENCE this Friday and Saturday
at San Diego City College. I gave some
to IAN MILLER, one of the FOOD NOT LAWNS
members helping to organize that conference.
We grow Sugar cane here.

Last week I met ANTHONY RUSSO
of EARTHSMART. He is producing
a styrofoam substitute for plates
made of sugarcane.
We grow sugarcane here at
the ENCHANTED GARDEN INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY.
I took photos of the Earthsmart disposables
over the weekend.
KEEP The BEET Media Star
The World's First Talking Beet Plant
is asking me to start a campaign
to end the use of Styrofoam.
I took some of Anthony Russo's
Earthsmart ware to the Hillcrest Farmers' Market
on Sunday to start getting some feedback
for this product.
I am going to take some samples to
the CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE CONFERENCE
This Friday and Saturday.

“Back in 1991, my ship, the Sea Shepherd, was anchored in the harbor of Port of Spain, Trinidad,” Captain Watson said. “A few hours later, the entire surface area of the harbor was dirty white, as if an ice floe had entered this tropical port. The "floe" consisted of Styrofoam, plastic bottles, and assorted plastic materials, as far as the eye could see, and it had come down from the streets, gutters, and streams into the harbor. And, of course, it was all washing out to sea, dispersed by wind and tide.
“What happened to it after that? The sun and the brine broke it down into little pellets of Styrofoam and little pieces of plastic - each an insidious, floating, deadly mine set adrift in an ocean of life.
“And over the years these little nodules have drifted. Many have been ingested by birds and fish. Weeks or months later, their victims decompose on the surface of the water or on a beach, re-exposing the nodules to the light of the sun, to be blown by the winds back into the sea. These vicious little inorganic parasites continue to maim and kill in an endless assault upon life in our oceans.”
The simple fact is that when you drop a Styrofoam cup onto the street, you're causing more damage than you would by dropping a stick of dynamite into the ocean. You set in motion an invasion of thousands of killer plastibots that will cause death and destruction for centuries to come.

The Perils of Plastic with Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen
Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen of the Algalita Marie Research Foundation tell us about the perils of plastic on land and in the sea. Marcus and Anna talk about some of their many adventures; JUNKride; a 2,000 mile bike ride from Vancouver, B.C. to Tijuana, Mexico, the voyage of the JUNKraft; a boat made of plastic bottles, and their trip to the North Pacific Gyre, where they investigated plastic in the ocean.
