Medical history conference set for April 25 in Bozeman
Acupuncture, Chinese apothecaries and abortion in the Old West will be the focus of a medical history conference to be held Friday, April 25, in Bozeman.

The eighth annual conference on the Medical History of the West will be held at the Bozeman Public Library, 626 East Main. The conference, titled "Shaping Medical Practice in the New State of Montana: Acupuncture, Apothecaries and Abortion," is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to notify the WWAMI Medical Education Program at Montana State University by April 18. Conference sponsors are the Volney Steele Endowment for the Study of Medical History, WWWAMI, MSU's Department of History and Philosophy and the Bozeman Public Library.

12:30 p.m. -- Registration/conversation.
1 p.m. -- Welcome. Linda Hyman, vice provost for the Division of Health Sciences and director of the WWAMI program at MSU.
1:15 p.m. -- "Microbes and mechanical marvels: Advances in medicine at the dawn of the 20th century." Dr. Herbert M. Swick, research professor in the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Montana and clinical associate professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
2 p.m. -- "Winning, waxing and waning of public health powers: The early years of the Montana State Board of Health." Ellen Leahy, health officer for the Missoula City-County Health Department.
2:45 p.m. -- Break.
3 p.m. -- "Wriggling across the empire: Worms, medicine, and the Qing Imperial Project." Carla Nappi, assistant professor in MSU's history and philosophy department.
3:45 p.m. -- "Miracle cures and magical casseroles: Chinese apothecaries in the American medical marketplace, 1875-2008." Aminda Smith, assistant professor of history at Michigan State University.
4:30 p.m. -- Conclusion of afternoon session.
5 p.m. -- Conversation and participant reception.
6:15 p.m. -- Introductory comments. Dr. Volney Steele, retired pathologist. Author of "Bleed, Blister and Purge: A History of Medicine on the American Frontier."
6:30 p.m. -- "Abortion in the Old West: The trials of Edwin S. Kellogg of Helena, Mont." Todd Savitt, instructor at East Carolina University medical schools.
7:15 p.m. -- "History of illegal abortion in Montana: 1883-1910." Diane Sands, development director for the Missoula County Historical Museum at Fort Missoula and Montana legislator from Missoula.
8 p.m. -- "Rescue, reform and women in trouble: 1890s to 1910." Ellen Baumler, instructor of Montana history at the University of Montana in Helena. Author of "Dark Spaces: Montana's Historic Penitentiary at Deer Lodge" to be published this fall.
