Mother's Love
When out to cover the earthworms
and check on the hummingbird nest
in the orange tree.
What possesses a Mother to sit
on her nest through the cold and rain?

Lots to process today.
It is raining.
It has been raining the last three Sundays
in what the state of Ca was considering a time
of draught and then instituting water cutbacks.
The water cutbacks were really making it
hard on Joe and the other local farmers.
I have not been able to reach Joe today.
I did not go down to the FM.
It has been pouring rain all morning.
I went out to make sure the earth worms were covered.
They were drowning out when I checked yesterday.
All the worm survivors were collecting near the top
climbing out of the water.
I dumped some of the water out yesterday
and did that again today.
I covered the bin today.
Then, I went to check on the hummingbird nest
that my neighbor Nuni pointed out in our orange tree.
I took some photos of the eggs the other day.
The mother was hovering nearby.
She was glad to get a break for sitting on the eggs.
Today, in the rain, I figured she would be there
protecting the next from the cold and water.
What possesses a mother to know instinctively
to protect the offspirng?
Here she was sitting in the cold and rain,
water running off her feathers
droplets collecting on the orange leaves.
I imagine it is Mother's Love that
inspires such action, primal unthinking
Mother's Love.
