Days 1-5
Intro, background and description of days 1-5
Date: 1/17/2008 1:38:24 AM ( 16 y ) ... viewed 1636 times I started my very first 10 day juice fast on Saturday (1-12-08). I'm doing this for a few reasons:
-To clear up a persistent skin issue on my back (hives?)
-To allow my digestive tract time to clear out all the nasties from 2007
-To determine whether I have food allergies
-To lose a little weight
-To feel energized
-To prove to myself and the world that I can
-To see what, if any, spiritual epiphanies it may bring about
Background:
I'm 28 years old, female, 135 lbs, 5'5". I have been trying to establish a daily exercise routine, doing Dan Millman's Peaceful Warrior Workout in the mornings most days and walking 30 min at a time 3 days a week (hopefully more now that I have a walking buddy.)
I don't own a scale, so any weight I lose will be monitored strictly by the way my clothes fit.
Day 1:
Made fresh juice containing organic cucumber, celery, bell peppers, beets, celery, carrots, tomato, apples, pears, asian pears, oranges, grapefruit, lemon, parsley, spinach, and blackberries. Diluted it with water. Drank 2 liters of this juice, added psyllium husk powder to one glass, along with lots of water and herbal tea. Drank miso soup for dinner. Went camping in the desert and froze my butt off (not very good timing since juice fasting usually makes you cold anyhow.) Successfully danced and partied sober into the night and felt refreshed to wake up without a hangover. =)
Day 2:
Felt great! Drank 2 more liters of the same juice, one glass with psyllium husk powder, a little pre-packaged green juice containing spirulina and all that good stuff, lots of water and herbal tea, veggie broth for dinner. Didn't notice any real changes. Did notice how sensitive I am to food smells now- even Burger King smelled delicious when we stopped for my boyfriend's cheeseburger on the way home from camping. I wasn't tempted, however. Decided that since these two days were such a breeze, I'd keep going and see if I could make it to 10 days. I read that you don't see the real improvements until day 6 or so.
Day 3:
Still felt great! Made a new batch of veggie/fruit juice. Selected ingredients more carefully this time to make it taste better. Energy levels are average. I read that many people have an easier time waking in the morning during fasts, but it is not so for me. Not yet, anyhow. Haven't really been tempted to eat food, but did find myself almost reaching for some while preparing food for others- how mindless we can be in our habits! Had a tiny BM today- pooped pellets like a bunny! Psyllium husk is working I guess. Also remembered that I got some flax seed oil and downed a tablespoon of that. Had a temper tantrum in the evening. I read somewhere that day 3 is the hardest... that it was.
Day 4:
Proud of myself for reaching this point. Looking forward to being half way done, as the idea of food is enticing. It's amazing how little we need to consume to feel good. Still on the same batch of veggie/fruit juice. Bought some more ingredients for tomorrow's batch. All the same other drinks and supplements, but upped the psyllium husk powder dose to 2 teaspoons. Made fresh ginger tea to see if it would help with the circulation. I am usually a bit on the cold side, and I also noticed my hands falling asleep at night since I started the fast. Had my weekly massage in the morning which felt amazingly good (better than usual).
Day 5:
Half way!!! Administered my very first enema this morning. Wasn't sure if I did it exactly right (the darn thing barely provided any instructions, so had to go off of mom's rendition of how she does it). Seemed to be successful. Had a little gas later in the day with no odor, so I figure it worked. Made another batch of juice this time with some grapes and wheat grass added. Dinner was some pre-packaged veggie bisque soup, which I think contained some things that were undesirable for fasting- like sugar and maybe some starchier veggies. But it was all I had. Still no solid food, and have kept temptation at bay.
Some people think I'm crazy, but I know that this is the best way for me to start off my year. I actually woke up with no problem this morning and feel really good. Went for a 30 min walk with my new walking buddy. Energy levels are good. Whenever I get hungry, I just drink more juice and then I'm ok again. I think this is making me a lot more aware of what I put into my body. I was eating pretty well before (lots of whole grains, veggies and fruit, legumes, seeds and nuts, plenty of water, minimal greasy fried foods, sugar, white flour and chemicals.) However, I was eating a TON of chocolate which leads me to believe that I've got an addiction/allergy to it. My skin seems to be clearing up after 5 days of no chocolate. Hopefully after the fast I can reintroduce it into my diet and have tiny amounts without problems.
I plan to do a 1-day-a-week juice fast in the future to give the body a rest and make sure my diet stays on track. It should be all downhill from here!
