Blog Description What is Colon Cancer
A kind of cancer called colorectal cancer (CRC) develops in the cells that line the interior of the colon and the rectum. At the very end of the small intestine are these two organs. The second most common cause of cancer-related death in both men and women is colon cancer. In fact, when both sexes are combined, it is the third most prevalent malignancy. How Colon Cancer Develop The first step in preventing colon cancer is to find out whether you have inherited a genetic predisposition toward developing colon cancer. People who inherit a mutation in their APC gene (APC stands for adenomatous polyposis coli) have a higher risk of developing colon cancer. People with Lynch syndrome have a higher risk of colon cancer, even though they don’t carry an APC mutation. You should talk to your doctor about what tests might be appropriate for you. How to Prevent Colon Cancer 1. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables are loaded with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. These compounds help protect our bodies against free radical damage. Antioxidants neutralize harmful chemicals produced by the body's own cells, called reactive oxygen species (ROS). Free radicals cause DNA damage, which may lead to cancer. Foods high in antioxidants include blueberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, oranges, strawberries, red bell peppers, onions, garlic, apples, pears, peaches, plums, green beans, and mushrooms. 2. Reduce alcohol consumption Alcohol contains acetaldehyde, a chemical that causes oxidative damage to cells. In addition, heavy drinking increases the risk of developing certain types of cancers, including breast cancer. Reducing alcohol intake reduces the risk of many types of cancer, including those of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, stomach, colorectal, and breast. 3. Limit processed meats Processed meats contain nitrites, which have been linked to colon cancer. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that people who ate processed meat had higher levels of heterocyclic amines (HCAs), substances formed during cooking that are known carcinogens. Other studies have shown that HCAs increase the risk of colon cancer. 4. Avoid smoking tobacco products Cigarettes contain toxins, including tar and carbon monoxide, that damage blood vessels and contribute to heart disease. Tobacco smoke increases the risk of several types of cancer, including lung, oral cavity, larynx, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and cervix. 5. Drink plenty of water Drinking enough water helps flush out toxins from the system and keeps organs functioning properly. Water prevents constipation and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches, confusion, dizziness, and muscle cramps. 6. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity helps keep weight off and promotes good health. Studies show that regular exercise reduces the risk of diabetes, hypertension, stroke, some forms of cancer, and osteoporosis. 7. Get adequate sleep Adequate sleep is associated with improved immune function and reduced inflammation. People who get less than six hours of sleep per night are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, and Alzheimer's disease. Forum Link1: Forum Link2: |
