This is Day 9 of what I hope will be a 30-day juice fast. I am a 35-year-old wife, mother to three, law student. I've always been a classic Type A, but it's catching up with me. I've recently realized that I am on a downward spiral, using caffeine and Ritalin to make it through the day, then sleeping pills and alcohol to go to sleep at night. I had mood swings, my hair was falling out, and I was binge-eating. I had quit smoking the month before I started law school, and have gained 45 pounds in the past year and a half. I replaced one unhealthy habit with another. I obviously don't know how to deal with my stress. But step one appears to be simply detoxing, and like any other addiction recovery, this is uncomfortable as hell.

The first week was good. I felt strong, felt really awake and felt very positive. The last two days have been awful. I've been hungry. Not like a "nibbly" sort of hungry, but the kind of hungry that finds me standing in front of the cupboard, just staring. TV commercials were killing me, so I've stopped watching television. I keep craving all of those things I am determined to stay away from, like potato chips and cupcakes and enchiladas and chips with guacamole. I know that this is the addiction taking control of me, so I fight. I imagine that anyone kicking a habit to cocaine or liquor has the same sort of battle.

So this is me. I have faith that I can see this through. I have done crazier things, made more extreme changes in my life. This will be worth it in the end. For those who want to know, I drink about 24 ounces of juice a day and a whole lot of water. I use Dr. Brandt's green tea extract twice a day and take a multivitamin. I have completely weaned myself off of the caffeine and the Ritalin, though I still do take melatonin some nights. The insomnia is definitely better now that there are no stimulants in my system, but not completely gone yet. Please feel free to comment or say hello or share your own experiences. Thanks!

    • Mother Nature is Your Friend   by  rawgirl     18 y     1,827
Congratulations on your very brave and awesome cold turkey detox.

My share is to take refuge in Mother Nature, and spend time in her garden of earthly delights.

For example, one day of all the gorgeous seeded organic watermelon you can eat / juice / blend.

Keep fasting on liquids that YOU liquify from the freshest organic produce you can find.

Buy a cheap used juicer if you don't have one, or chop things up and blend them with ice.

      A couple of faves:

Chop up a very ripe (must be dusky golden, not green) pineapple with water and ice, and blend a long time to break up fiber. Absolutely delicious!

Another fave: blend a large (and cheap) Mexican papaya with ice, water, and a bit of cinnamon. Add stevia to sweeten if desired. Very refreshing and easy to digest.

Using fresh fruits and juices allows your tissues to cleanse .... much better than cooked juices (all bottled or commercial juices are cooked).

Best of luck to you! You are adding years to your life as you incorporate this into a healthy lifestyle and introduce this as your children's diet. Have them make the juices with you and you are being the best mom ever! My son juices every morning and he wants to because he knows it makes him feel better ... much better breakfast than cereal and milk or toast.

Keep going and let us know how you are doing!

    • I Admire You!   by  KickingHabits     18 y     1,962
I applaud your effort! I so admire you too. I recently purchased a Jack Lalanne juicer and began juicing. I love the juice and am experimenting with various recipes because I am totally new to this. Unfortunately I cannot juice greens and such because I didn't know I'd require a different type of juicer for that. Oh well.

I so want to do a juice fast. Four weeks ago I had a hysterectomy, and yesterday I had oral surgery. I am off work healing from both and I really want to use this rest period to relax and do the best I can for my health. But I just can't seem to get myself to fast! I do well most of the day, then cave in at night. I don't eat much, but I do start nibbling on pineapples, or a lean piece of turkey or chicken. Each new day I dream of fasting, yet I still fail. I wish I had a partner here with me.

Congrats on your success so far. Keep up the good work!
