I relaid my lawn about 4 years ago using the rolled up grass. Some areas were not doing so well so I put down lawn seed. These seeds have grown but it is a lighter colored heavier duty type grass. i never tried charcoal and was always told to be careful with using too much ashes. best product i used was a Kelloggs ”Compost” that was really more of a tiny woodchip/sawdust kind of product. i dont think it added much in the way of nutrients but it was great for soil structure in that it preventing clumping/hardpan, allowed excellent aeration, good moisture holding capacity and made it easy for plants to send roots deep into the soil. to this i added a regular type of compost (Supersoil), steer manure and blood meal, bone meal etc. i was able to get all this stuff from Home Depot, h ...

I’m able to get sawdust from a lumber shop and ashes and charcoal from a restaurant. We have been piling on the sawdust and I’m careful not to overdo the ashes. There is a surprising amount of charcoal which I ground up for terra preta. Corn seems to grow well, so we will grow several back to back crops of sweet corn to help starve out the root knot and build up more OM. that’s disappointing. from what i’ve read most of the pest problems are caused by poor soil structure, lack of minerals, lack of compost, etc and it seems to be true in my experience. Sounds like you can’t get compost there affordably and probably there isn’t the equipment there to make any on a larger scale such as grinding up tree branches like the guy in the Back to Eden film so the only thing i could think of is hugulkulture. I have a beautiful garden going with my deep raised beds. But there are no bees nor bumblebees to pollinate the blooms. Absolutely none. I even have lots of white clover to attract the pollinators. Last January I posted about the ”Back to Eden” site. http://vimeo.com/28055108 I did use one of my small garden spots to experiment with their theory. My results were not good. It was more rainy than normal and the garden spot was not a well drained area. Some seeds did rot in the ground because the area could not dry out. Also the wood chips seemed to draw the nitrogen out of the soil. Nothing would grow well here. When I finally started putting grass clippings on the soil, things started picking up but it was late in the season. One article in the local paper said the rainy seas ... [Video Embedded Here]
