Is there a cheaper alternative to water distillers !??

I have read that the only way to get fluoride / chlorine etc out of water is to distil it. However, distillers are so expensive!! Does anyone know how to cheaply and easly make your own water distiller or is there a cheaper alternative ?

Also for shower/bath water I have heard you can get distillers, but I have read that they do not work! Is this true ? Either way is there a cheaper solution ?
