Hand on a Pregnant Belly--an intimate experience and sharing

I participated in a very intimate and holy experience Saturday August 23 that continues to resonate through me with deep meaning.

I want to reflect on this.

I have been sensitized in recent days about asking permission before I do certain things. There is another image I would like to share here, but I want to get permission first.

As the elder at the gathering, I was asked to share some words first as we were the circle at a time to share thoughts.

I began with a line from a poem I wrote many years ago, I said, "We are born each time a child is born."

There were no less than six pregnant women in this circle. There was an the intent to welcome us all into the awareness that it takes a Village to raise a child.

Many of my thoughts that afternoon were about my own experience of being left out of community as I have once known it "in the Village." For many years, there was a gathering called the Whole Being Weekend. Many would say I was Mr. Whole Being. I did a lot of growing there and had opportunity to experience my voice in ceremony. I left because I felt there was little recognition of Elders. In the olden days of this weekend, we honored deeply our elders. We made special place for their voices. We had many of the greatest of the sages who would visit the Whole Being Weekend.

There are other places where I felt I expressed my voice and ceremony over the years. The Farmers' Market was a powerful experience of communal activity for me for many years. It is less so that now a days, although still a very important event for me each week.

I have had a difficult time adjusting to being my age.

I am making every effort to come again into a welcoming relationship to this physical world. My digestion is still very much compromised, even as I make plans to go through the process of taking a 1600 mile trip in my 68 VW Van called the Enchanted Garden Mobile to the National Heirloom Expo.

When I was called upon to speak at this very special ceremony time, this came unexpectedly.

I paused first. Then, I said some things.

If I were to take a "Take Two." These are some of the things I would say.
I also want to express my longing to be invited back into the Village. It is not easy to be 66 for me. I do not have the energy I once had. I do not feel my purpose in the Village. I do not express it often.

Gratefully, one of the pregnant mothers-to-be, a friend, welcomed me to speak.

These are what I would say now.

IT IS OUR NATURE TO KNOW NATURALLY HOW TO PLANT SEEDS, LET's NOT ONLY STOP HERE WITH KNOWING HOW TO PLANT HUMAN SEEDS. THE WORLD OF NATURE IS ASKING US TO KNOW AS WELL THAT WE HAVE A BIRTH RIGHT TO KNOW HOW TO GROW OUR OWN FOOD AND KNOW ABOUT HEALTHY FOOD

The conversation is still out in many people's minds about what healthy food really is. I do not feel healthy food includes foods grown with GMO Seeds that resist Pesticides.

1.

A VILLAGE HAS ITS GARDENERS.

All garden a bit.

Why should we only have intimate knowledge with sharing our human seeds. Why not have intimate knowledge knowing how to plant heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains?

(I had many old packages of Heirloom Seeds with me in the EG Mobile, my 68 VW van.
I did not think until this morning that I could have brought them in. They may not still be fertile seeds, but they could have fertilized the imagination and been musical instruments to give away.

I had a lot of things to make into seed packages to carry to the National Heirloom Expo. Rather than grieving my past, I could have set up a little station and invited some of the youth to help me make some packages. Even if I just did this myself in that space, that would have been healing for me.)

I see in my mind's eyes a few of the pregnant mothers to be blessing the EG Mobile for this trip. It is so special that such a thing exists as a National Heirloom Expo where teachers come together to share their knowledge of the ancient Heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains.

I am very honored to still have a voice there; yet this morning, I am wondering about the power in having a Local Heirloom Gathering. I hope I can heal enough in my relationship to the physical to experience that on the land where I live near SDSU.

2.

A VILLAGE NEEDS GOOD FOOD

I did not sense that many in the Tribe were aware of the ingredients in the foods we brought or offered. I hope I am incorrect about this.

More soon…

I WANT TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGS OF THE CHALLENGE CARE TAKING A PROPERTY WITH MANY PLANTS THAT ALL NEED A VILLAGE

It is not only a child that needs a village. Healthy plants need a village too!

TAKE TWO

What I would have liked to have done at this Tribal gathering…?

it came to me this early morning….

I left myself out because I was tired…and in my own world.
I did not hear about this event until the day I went. I was writing all morning.

TOWARD A NATIONAL PROTOCOL THAT PAVES THE WAY FOR SEED LIBRARIES TO KNOW THEY ARE SAFE TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD

I had many packets of old heirloom seeds in the EG Mobile. I could have brought them in.

I want to give away old seeds before I leave town…

Got to get ready for the Farmers' Market...

HERE ARE SOME LINKS TO GET UP TO SPEED WITH SOME OF THE IDEAS I FEEL WE NEED TO TEACH HERE IN MY CITY AND AT THE NATIONAL HEIRLOOM EXPO SEPTEMBR 9,10,11.

I ordered some memorability from the Simpson Public Library site that arrived August 18, 2014. I would like to take these to The National Heirloom Expo September 9,10,11 in Santa Rosa, Ca, where I will teach as well as participate in a National Seed Library Summit. I went into the garden to plant Ancient Grains of Kamut ® Khorasan wheat today that had been sprouting during the last week. I am planting seeds for clarity around the Simpson Seed Library-Department of Ag Communications. May good come from the communication. May all our work pave the way for Seed Libraries to continue to flourish with the well wishes of all. May a National Conversation emerge in support of Seed Saving, Support for Seed Libraries, and GMO Education. I wrote Plant Your Dream Blogs to contribute to this clarity and good outcomes. Today, I heard from Johnny Zook, Seed Program Supervisor, Penn Department of Ag, and Jonelle Darr, Cumberland County Executive Director, home of the Simpson Seed Library. Darr thanked me for attempting to correct the facts and said, "From what I could see, the information that you have regarding my statements, and the library's actions are correct." Johnny Zook said he liked the story and that I included what needed to be told regarding their communications. Here is the story, "Planting Clarity! Simpson Seed Library and Ag Dept Wrap Up," "Planting Clarity! Simpson Seed Library and Ag Dept Wrap Up," --Leslie Goldman, Your Enchanted Gardener, August 18, 2014.

A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF CORRESPONDENCE AND PRESS ON THE JOSEPH T. SIMPSON LIBRARY SITE REGARDING THEIR SEED LIBRARY

The Simpson Public Library has done a wonderful job of detailing the main communications about the unfoldment of these events.

A GROWING NUMBER OF SEED LIBRARIES NOW EXIST IN MANY PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

This is the way the Seed Library has been working;

Seed libraries, often located in public libraries or other community gathering points, are institutions created for the purpose of sharing seeds. The idea is that a library patron can “check-out” seeds to grow themselves, let “go-to-seed”, and then return seeds to the library to share with other community members. The seeds circulated at lending libraries are usually regionally-adapted and heirloom (unlike most commercial “hybrid” seeds, so that the next generation of seeds will produce plants similar to the parent plant). The purpose of most seed libraries is to provide an alternative to genetically modified seeds, increase biodiversity and plant resilience, and reconnect local people with their food systems.

More about Seed Libraries are found on the seed library social network site
