Nature's Wisdom - a Comparitive Analogy for our times

Damage to essential parts of nature's systems creates catastrophic consequences - "Alcoholc is to fetal DNA as Emissions are to Global Warming"

Continuums Lost - How wrong it is

Nobody has trouble understanding what a terrible injustice it is to the unborn when it is damaged by alcohol consumed by the mother. We might rationalise her actions by saying she was ignorant of the consequences, or that she was just too mentally disturbed to overcome her addiction, but for the baby there is no recourse, no way around it - the damage is permanent.

Also, if the damage is severe enough, the child will never grow up to be independant, it will need care just to survive for it's entire life. It will never carry out it's biological imperitive either - reproduction is usually impossible, and probably not a good idea due to the genetic damages that might be passed on.

"Permanent changes" sounds like a misnomer in that if things change, as if they could change back, or change for the better. With nature's ways, however, as in DNA when damaged or changed suddenly, there is only negative consquences. It is a way to ensure that things which are not healthy do not reproduce, and that is what has ensured the vitality of life on earth. Nature is great and wise.

At first sight, these unfortunate babies may appear normal. The uninitiated may even find something good to say about it - "the baby does not cry much, it must be content". The terrible truth will soon be revealed though.

---

It is like this with global warming, we might find some reason to rationalise it, to find something good about it - "the northwest passage will be open to shipping in summers, maybe all year 'round" ; and "we will have warmer winters and longer growing seasons".

The terrible truth will be revealed:

That terrible truth of worst case scenarios:
- ocean coastline flooding - 3.2 billion people occupy the coastal strip 200 kilometres wide throughout coastlines around the world, and these heavily populated coastlines will be flooded as ocean levels rise from the melting ice sheets. It will happen whenever there is enough meltwater getting underneath the ice sheets of Greenland and the Antarctic, meltwater that lubricates their anchoring to the rocks beneath them. When it happens, the Greenland ice sheet, for example, could suddenly slip into the ocean. How sudden? - nobody knows, and nobody is predicting the worst case scenarios - we do not seem to want to know the truth!! That slippage could happen 'any year now', maybe within 20 years, or we may have up to 100 years [all the scientific estimates so far have been less that what is actually observed happening]. And, how FAST will it happen once it does begin to slip? - it could happen within a single summer season.

- Fires and Floods occuring in the same season - we saw this in Greece and in California this summer - and that will cause:

- Drought and erosion that will take most of the topsoils away, and they will be lost until there is 100s of years of new vegitation growth. New growth will not happen until AFTER the atmosphere finds it balance again, likely 1000s of years down the road

- Summer heat in Europe and North America that exceeds 50oC for 5 months of the year, and that will create howling winds the rest of the year that will make life nearly impossible. We might see those temperatures and feel those brutal winds within the next 20 years.

Such is the way of nature, be it our fetal DNA that is damaged by alcohol where there is so much damage to an essential part that the organism cannot function. Changes in those systems causes catastrophic damage. The fetal alcohol child would die without continuous care, it will never be a self sufficient adult and it will not produce offspring - the continuum has been severed at the point in time when DNA is damaged.

Similiarly, the organism that is planet earth's biosphere is no different - the damage done to such an essential component as the atmosphere will cause catastophic damage to the entire planet. Such damage will render it unable 'to care for itself' or the life-forms it supports, it will not survive in it's current beautifull form. All this wonderfull biospheric natural life we have now will be lost, maybe never to return. Once the damage is done, the larger biosphere of planet earth might continue to exist for awhile, but the continuum will be severed when the atmosphere is drastically changed by our fossil fuel emissions, just as surely as when the DNA was damaged in the feotus.

The human race is about to drink that penultimate bottle of booze that tears the DNA apart, and that drink is called OIL. The estimated 'catastrophic' limit for carbon dioxide is 450 p.p.m., carbon dioxide levels were measured at 379.1 parts per million in 2005. Therefore, we may have done it allready, or it could be 'the drink' of the next 5 years, but it is too close to that limit, we have gone too far, to believe that the damage that will endure has not been done allready.
