Maintaining a healthy brain is an essential part of a person's health. Unfortunately, no magic pill will prevent a potential decline in a person's cognitive functions. Although many experts say there are specific types of food that a person should consume that not only keep their brains strong and healthy but also aids in protecting their heart and blood vessels.

Green Vegetables

The first food that benefits brain health is green, leafy vegetables. This includes vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and collards. Each of these is high in nutrients such as vitamin K, lutein, folate, and beta carotene, which all support a healthy brain and aid in slowing down the decline in a person's cognitive function.

Berries

Another food to add to a person's diet to support their brain's health would be berries. These delicious fruits have a natural pigment called flavonoids, which have been shown to improve a person's memory as well as give berries their bright colors. There was also a study done that showed that women who consumed two or more servings of strawberries and blueberries every week. They had a delay in memory decline by almost two and a half years.

Those who also want the benefits of the berries plus the leafy green vegetables for their brain health could also look for a red superfood powder that makes it easier to consume these beneficial foods and support a healthy brain.

Fish

Fatty fish have been shown to have an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats. This combination has been connected to lower blood levels of beta-amyloid, which is the protein that creates potentially damaging clumps in a person's brain linked to Alzheimer's disease. Eating fish twice a week can prevent this from becoming a problem. A person will want to focus on the fish that is lower in mercury, such as cod, canned light tuna, salmon, and pollack.

There may be some out there who are not a fan of fish. In that case, asking a doctor about taking an omega-3 supplement would be a good idea. Other foods such as flaxseeds and avocado are terrestrial omega-3 sources a person can eat instead.

Coffee and Tea

A majority of people out there turn to a cup of coffee or tea in the morning to boost their energy and get their day started. But, little did they know that these are more than just for energy. There was a study done that showed people who consumed a higher amount of caffeine scored better on mental function tests.

It has also been shown to solidify new memories, as one study showed from John Hopkins University where they had participants study various images, and then one group took a placebo. The other would take a 200-milligram caffeine tablet. Those who took the caffeine tablet were shown to be able to identify the image correctly, while the other group struggled. So, those who love starting their day with a hot cup of coffee or tea can enjoy it, knowing it is improving their brain's health as well as giving them a boost of energy.

Walnuts

The final food that has been shown to aid brain health is walnuts. These nuts are an excellent source of healthy fats as well as protein. It has also been shown to improve memory. One study showed an association between higher consumption of walnuts and a boost in cognitive test scores. They are another food high in omega-3 fatty acids that also lower blood pressure and cleanse the arteries, making them suitable for a person's heart and brain.

Those concerned for their minds' health should add all of these foods to their diets to ensure they maintain a healthy brain.
